was driving fj45 low kms 120 000kms 1982 2F, oil pressure dropped, heard ticking, then shut off motor, tried to restart and heard a slight grind when wanting to turn over, it was turning over but then would slow, grind down, towed home, pulled the oil pan and found a couple small small pieces of hard shiny compressed metal on the opposite side of the oil drain plug, attach is picture of size of metal pieces, maybe 3 to 5 little mouse turd size pieces. When looking underneath the vehicle see a very dry first cylinder conrod, dont know if this is normal or not, everything else looks all oil and clean as a whistle,

Oil was clean as can be and filled perfectly on the stick. No white smoke and no water in the oil.

Any ideas what might have happened/where to go now?

main bearing on crankshaft???

That dry conrod is certainly not normal.

Looks like you lost oil pressure and bearings have started to seize. (With No.1 big-end bearing getting so hot that it has vapourised/burnt the oil away.)

But yet you say the oil was clean? Surely you must have at least smelt burnt oil when you removed the sump?

I'd expect to see something more than just those tiny fragments in the sump (for you to have completely lost oil pressure).

Try and find another cause for the loss of oil pressure. (Has the drive to the oil pump failed?)

And remove the big-end cap on No.! cylinder and check for scoring/bearing-damage.

If you lost oil pressure, you may have damaged one or more rod or main bearings. Drop that 1st rod cap and see what the bearing looks like. Make sure the cap is marked so that you know it's existing orientation on the rod.

is the pick up tube from the sump clogged with shavings... could of sucked them through the oil pump??? creating the loss of oil pressure...

cap on #1 won't come off, looks like it has heat-welded itself to the crank or bearing sleeve. any trick on getting it off? distributor drive seems fine, what else can cause oil pressure to go like that?

The bearing has adhered to the crank and the rod/cap. Thread the nuts part way back onto the rod bolts and tap them up with a hammer. Start gentle and work up from there. Protect the threads, bolts, and other vital parts. Use a strip of hardwood if needed to protect the bolts/nuts.

Don't know about your loss of oil pressure. Had the distributor been removed and reinstalled recently?
