Hi my name is Kaleena and Im Chui's GF. Unfortunately he is in the middle of a safari and I cannot get hold of him. I need to take his BJ74 to a game reserve. I have no idea how the 4wd system works, just have limited knowledge.
There is the 4wd gear, the two diff lock cables near the driver door, (one is front diff lock the other rear diff lock) and the locks on the front wheel hubs. There are no buttons or anything.
If I need to engage 4wd what on earth do I do. My bf showed me once but im so confused now. I enage the 4wd gear by pushing it upwards, then I pull the front diff lock cable and then I turn the knob to 'lock' on the front tyres.
Is that correct?
Or?
What about rear diff lock cable, do i use that?
Please help me out of you can.

What vehicle is it for

Ok lets forget about the difflocks for the time being.

1 Put the wheel hubs into the locked position(do it at the wheels).

2 The 7* series models have 2 ways to put it into 4wd,either a button on the right side of dash or by pulling the shift lever back.
A BJ74 usually has a button to engage 4wd

3 You should now be in 4wd

4 There is also a low range when you need lots of power but slow speed(steep hill)
To engage low, shift the shifter to the right when stopped(its stiff) or pull the shifter right back if you have a push button 4wd.

5 The front and rear difflocks are used in extreme conditions such as mud or over very rough rocks.
If you re on bad roads you wont need difflocks
If you do need them,do it after items 1-4 have been done;)

Dont forget to switch it all back to 2wd when you are back on the hard stuff
Look at the shift pattern on the floor shifter,if it is straight up/down it is a push button 4wd,if it has a dog leg for low range it is manual shift.

Hi.
LOL.
Thanks for the reply.
Ok there is no button, I remember my BF telling me that it was removed. The gear shift small one is currently always in a downward left position. Car runs like this always. So to engage the 4wd I turn the hubs and then push the small gear shift upwards right? No need to pull the diff lock cable unless its really muddy?
am i getting there.
Its a BJ74. No buttons.

sorry meant when driving normally the 4wd gear is in the upward left position.

The 2wd position is forward and its pulled back for 4wd and moved right for low 4wd.
I think you have it :D

Maybe you can make sense of my drawing:o

1) lock the hubs at the wheels (twist clockwise to lock)

2) if the shift lever has an L shaped shift pattern, then closer to the seat=4wd to put it in lower gears, you go towards the seat, then to the right.

if you get stuck due to lack of power (ie: you stall) then using lower gears may help
if you get stuck due to lack of traction (spinning tire) then using the rear differential cable lock may help. but only use the cable until you are not stuck.

On my BJ 74 the procedure is:

Lock the front hubs and press the 4wd button for high range 4wd.
Make sure you are stopped and move the transfer lever (little gear stick) down towards you to select low range 4wd.
You don't have to shift the lever to the right on my BJ74. Its either up or down, two positions.
Not sure if all BJ74's like that though.
Wish I had cable lockers.

hey guys, thanks for your help. I managed to go and come back safely. Engaged the 4wd only once, on the way to the Masai Mara, locked the hubs then moved the gear (lil one) downwards, (up and down only with this gear) and was ok.
Cheers and thanks alot.
