New to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (from Cape Town)
Howzit!

Darrel here from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, just completed my first month here having moved from Cape Town, South Africa.

Now the fun starts, choosing a Land Cruiser. I was initially keen on an 1984 FJ40 that was for sale locally however while it may be fun I doubt it will be practical sitting in traffic or cross country camping trips.

I see a number of 2006-2008 shorty 76's around with between 90,000 - 140,000 kilometers (56,000 - 87,000 miles) on for about $17,000. I generally would have zero issues buying a 2nd hand vehicle with this mileage on back home but being new and not having a garage, my own tools or anyone I can harass for assistance my question is this - would you think I still bite the bullet and go for it despite everyone having a buy a new car mentality here?

In my mind the 4500 EFI engine is pretty bullet proof but keen to here feedback from those in the know?

PS. my vehicles before moving in Feb were a kitted Jimny, don't revoke my membership now :) and a KTM 690 Enduro

UAE has special inspections you have to meet. Know that before you buy. Looks like your handy so get some tools and build friendships that dont mind helping where needed. I hear there a local shops where labor is cheap and parts are plenty used or new. The 1fzfe is bulletproof proof. Main issue is headgasket if cooling system is subpar and neglected. You have come to Mud, you will find a wealth of knowledge here and friends that can help.

Enjoy your time in Riyadh. We lived there for 4 years. Here is the best place to go for camping supplies:

Are you looking for something to take back to SA or just something to enjoy while in The Kingdom? I assume since SA is RHD you just want something while you are there? There's at least two very large Car Souq's in Riyadh. You should visit them if you haven't already. I think you can get good maintenance work done there; you just need to find the right Saudi colleague that is into Land Cruisers.

This is a very nice 2013. Photo is from 2020. That's the only 4 door 76 series that I saw in Riyadh. I know you mentioned the 2 door shorties but this would be a much nicer ride, if you can find one. Much more common in the UAE, FWIW.

A 4 door 79 series pickup would be nice as well but those would all be pretty new and much more expensive. Good luck with your search!

Hello,

The 4500 EFI engine is reliable.

It does not need much maintenance, aside from oil (and oil filter) change every 5000 km, air filter every 20000 km and fuel filter and sparkplugs change every 40000 km. If the Check Engine light comes on, you may need an OBD scanner. The port is to the right of the steering wheel.

You can also check more recent trucks with the V6 1GR engine.

Never heard of this website so thank you for this, I'm heading home in June for a quick visit so was going to bring some supplies with me but this is a great place to start should I leave my camping gear back home.
Go to the actual store in Riyadh. It's on King Abdulaziz Road. Try not to spend too much money. They have everything!
