:)Hello all, I am new to this site and to 4wd's for that mater. I have sold my FZR1000 to start 4wheelin. What i have at present is 2 HJ 60 wagons, both diesel [one 4 speed with a fairey overdrive, one 5 speed] and a hj45 ute. My plans are to take the entire running gear out of the 5speed hj60 and put it into the 45 ute. I have been looking at what exactly this would require, and everything looks to be easy enough [yeh right] with the exeption of the front spring alignment. Can anyone tell me where i might start looking for any info regarding this mod? And is there anything else i should consider for this mod? Any other tips regarding the following would be greatly appreciated engine mounts, steering, brake booster etc.
Andrew.

I would guess your 60's have the 2H what does the 45 have is it petro or diesel.

All diesels. The old 45 is so tired that it won't move uphill from a standing start, have to get a run up.:)

Where are you from?

G'day uted,
Great to see that you have already done this mod. I tried to have a look at your build but all i am getting is a blank screen. Will try again later. How did you fit your front springs? Which springs 45/60? How do you rate the mod? I am all the way up north 350 km's north of Brisbane. Can't wait to get the project underway and more importantly finished. My diesel fitter/panel beater is in the US at present, so when he returns i am into it. Are there pic's of the complete biuld?
Thanks
Andrew.:)

350k north of Brissy...where? you must be down the road

Just saw your message tourboy. I am outside of Childers. If you are ever over this way drop in. Always good for a cuppa [ or beer when allowed ]
:)

Pictures? I would be a lot more helpful with pictures.

Your HJ-45 will take the 2H out of the HJ-60 easily. The motor will pretty much bolt on, but you'll likely also have to add the crossmember under the H55f (5 speed) transmission to the 45. Easy to do.

Putting 60 axles under a 40 is a fairly common thing. Search the FAQ, and I believe you are interested in "outboarding" the springs.

As long as you are keeping the 60 rear axle, then you are in good shape as far as a parking brake goes. But you don't necessarily have to swap the axles if you didn't want to. You could just swap the engine, transmission and transfer case from the HJ-60 to the 45. You'd have to deal with a parking brake (there are aftermarket kits to do this), but you could swap the third members from the HJ-60 to the 45 axle housings, and the disc brake knuckles to the front axle if you wanted.

Did I mention that pictures are awesome?

Dan

G'day mate. Site is working again now. I out boarded the spring mounts and used the original 40 front springs. Can't rate the mod yet as i'm still in the build stage and have not driven it yet. Have never driven it :frown:

Welcome Andrew, it's good to see another aussie on here. Good luck with the driveline swap and yeah pictures are always received well!
Welcome to the addiction...

Thanks all, I don't think i will be doing the soa mod, not yet at least. I will go and take some pics today, might take me some time to work out how to post them. I do find myself being consumed with all things cruiser. I was told this site was great for info etc and i have not been disapointed. Thanks again. I will check the faq for the spring perch outboarding.:)

G'day Funkenstein,

You'll find that 45's are the ultimate meccano set. Doing the swap will be easy enough, are you swapping out an H or a 2H in your 45?

You might like to lurk on the Diesel Tech and 24 volts Systems side of this forum as well. Plenty of helpful people about. You might like to add your general location to your profile, it helps when people are trying to give you advice.

Being in Godsown country you have to be a little mindful of what modifications suspension wise you can get away with. What works in the US is generally frowned upon by Queensland Transport, and the NSW RTA too. Engine gearbox swap should be ok, as that was a factory option, just gotta be neat about the plumbing.

You will find you'll have to adjust the tinware on the transmission tunnel as the gearstick sits further back in a 60. If you swap in the 4speed/fairey box you could swap the gearbox tops to keep it in the right spot. Or you could just fab up a new bit of tin, thats your choice.

Its easy to swap on the 60's disk brakes onto the 45's front axle, common job.

Looks like your in for a lot of fun in the shed.

Cheers
Perry

Hi again, Not sure what the motor is that is coming out of the 45, It won't take off up hill in first on the smallest of inclines. All the bits i take off the 45 will be going to a mate as payment for work to be done. I have a 83 hj60 diesel wagon that is the donor, it has a 2h and 5 speed, with all the other bits. started today, more work than i thought but i don't have any real time restrictions and i am really looking forward to the biuld rather than seeing it as a job. I will do the star thing and post the pic's [might take some time to work this out but i will get there] Thanks
Andrew:)
