Ok I think this would be a pretty simple question. What size heims would you recommend for suspension links?

Are 3/4 heims big enough?

Strength wise, absolutely..

The question becomes where are they mounted and how much "bashing" on rocks are you going to do?

I personally like running a 1.25" heim on my lowers just because there is more meat on them to scrape on rocks.. The ones I use are actually not much stronger than the high quality 34x5/8" heims.

i used 3/4 on top and 1" on bottom links.....and ballistic fab seems to have some pretty good prices on heims these days

Nice! thanks guys! They will be on the upper portion. I will be using radius arms and was planning on using heims in replacement of bushings.

One thing o consider, that gets ignored on most super duper cool stuff builds.... Hiems were invented and are really bettter suited for clean environments. for some buggys and such this is fine... but where we run for example... lots of the water crossings and every puddle and mudhole is full of abrasive glacial silt, finer than flour. It gets into the hiems immediately and wears then FAST. a tiny bit of wear in each hiem, stacks up t a lot of shift in a suspension system.

There are applications where a bushing mount is a better idea, even if it gives less flex.

Just a data point for consideration.

those rebuildables are cool but would throw my budget! I still need to rebuild my tranny. What about getting boots for the heims?

actually I am thinking of doing radius arms front and rear. so I would need four. Heims are half the price.

radius arm rear suspension will have some very odd characteristics..

I Agree Especially on a Big Fat FJ60 like yours

This Rig is another Rock Ware Creation - Works great with Radius arms F&R, but Its a Small Lightweight Moon Buggy with a Very low COG.. this Thing Finished 12th Place at KOH 09

There is Nothing Wrong with some Leaf Springs.. those 56" long Chevy's would probably work good under the 60! and they fit right into your budget!

What type of characteristics? I saw a LR defender D-90 with radius arms in the rear. That is where I got the idea but I am pretty ignorant though when it comes to suspension stuff. Some one please educate me on why it would handle weird.

I know leafs will work great but then I need to do an antiwrap bar too. I tried pulling some 63" springs the other day and everything was all rusted on and I just gave up after 90 solid minutes. And those were the ones that were in the best shape. I should have had PB blaster with me though. that might have made it easier:bang:

Radius arms would just be so much easier and they came off in 30 minutes! But if it the handling with be all jacked up maybe the leafs would be worth the effort. :wrench::wrench::wrench::wrench::wrench::wrench:

D90's suspensions are designed to handle well on the freeway and with limited wheel travel.

Your Cruiser SO on stock springs flexes better than a D90 will..

How bout lots of suspension jacking on uphill climbs?
Torque roll as you apply power?
limited flex unless you do some sort of wristed arm, then odd braking with that wristed arm.

I understood everything but torque roll. What is that?

With 63" chevy leafs do you still need an antiwrap bar?

The 63s I have seen are all "half ton" springs and are soft even under a minitruck. Unless there is a heavier version I have not seen they will be completely inadequate under a Cruiser Wagon.

The 56 inch 3/4 ton springs are much more suitable.

Fogred johnny joints are going to run you about $40.. and they absorb some of the harshness that a heim will transmit through into the chassis.

I think that will definitely be an upgrade down the road. Every penny counts right now!:)

Boots is running 63s in the rear of his rig and I'm doing the same thing... He hasnt had much issue with them. So far they seem more than adequate for my setup. I got a set for $100 already pulled and waiting for me at the local junk yard.
