I have spent a few weeks redoing my heater on the my 72 40. I am pleased with how it turned out! However, I bought a new duct from a later model because the rubber peice that connects the duct to the heater box was a home made deal made out of a political yard sign....not cool.

Many people on here had said that it was a good fit and could easily interchange. I am having a difficult time getting this new one to fit.

Is this the correct duct? Do I need to change the brackets that hold this one onto the firewall? SOmething is just not right!

Thanks all and Merry Christmas!

Randy

You've got the wrong duct. The one you have fits '74 and later. You actually need 2 pieces, the plastic duct similar to the one you have and the rubber square duct that joins it to the heater box. Put up a "wanted" post on 'mud or try eBay. They are not particularly easy to find in good condition. Ho Ho Ho

Yeah I know that that rubber piece is hard to find. Many suggested that I get this one and put it on instead because that rubber piece is too hard to come by. They clare that it was an easy exchange but it doesn't seem to fit. I just need to know what to do to make this one work!

I redid my heater a while back and had a sheet metal shop make me the ducting piece that mates the heater and the solid duct. cost me 10 bucks and it works flawlessly. I just brought my heater box to the sheet metal guy and he did the rest. IIRC the piece of ducting was 6 in long

Thanks for the heads up. Looks like a piece of vinyl or pleather sewn together with a stretchy materrial for fitment. I wonder if my mother in law could make me one of those?!

inner tube and rubber cement.

I thought velcro would also work well instead so it's easy to remove.

i have that duct on several of my cruisers and it fits good .i think you bought that off of me .if it doesnt work send it back and i will refund your money.other people on here have done this and didnt have a problem.maybey its not the original heater.then again maybey my heaters werent original.the corners on my heaters dont seem to be as rounded as yours .

I dont think I bought it from you. I think I got it from someone else. i think someone from New Hampshire...... Dont get me wrong....I am not questioning the person that sold it to me....I am wondering if I am doing something wrong or need to make some kind of modifications. From what I understood, it was a plug and play exchange!

it was plug and play on mine but your heater inlet looks like the corners are more rounded than mine were..will see if i can get a photo and measurements mon.

This a pic off of Shane's write up regarding rebuilding the heaters. I know some of the ones during the same years have the defrost in the front, but mine (12-71) is on the side....just like this one. It says something about the placement of the defrost lever differing depending on which region it is in.......

fj40 heater duct

I just got one that is too short for my 74, it is the biggest piece of the one you need. It looks like the one you have will fit my 74. I'll take some pictures and measurements. If you get in touch with measurements of yours, maybe we can trade. jimfj40

I already have the longer piece that I need. But if you want this one let me know. I have no use for it!

The handle on the front was on the early heaters of the same style heater. If your heater had the defrost knob on the front center it would be in the way transmission shifter. The knob may have been on the side of earlier model with the optional floor shift be before 72 it was really rare in this country. I will say I stripped a 71 soft top model in a junk yard years ago and the knob was on the side. Both my 68 and 70 have the knob out the front. I have one or two more just don't remember where I got them.

Curious of a picture or two of what doesn't fit with this duct and heater. What doesn't fit? Side to side, top to bottom or front to back?
