I can't remember what it is called. It is the part that goes between the manifold and the crab base that circulates coolant through it to heat up the carb so the fuel is not supper cold and decreases warm up time. Any know what it is called? Searched for riser but not the right type.

The standard plumbing is
1. Hot water out of head heater barb down to
2. Heat riser plate inlet barb, passing through plate
3. Plate outlet barb, back over engine to
4. Heater valve on pass. firewall.

Two 5/8" heater hoses, kinda long, hafta be carefully routed to stay out of headers and throttle linkage.

MAF . . . Thats why I couldn't find it at SOR. Thanks!

Well while were on this subject, do they actually work? Maybe it would be better to ask are they worth the effort or would one be better off to fab or buy a header hot air trap?
Howdy! I built one for my FJ40 when I lived in Wyoming. It's not a miracle cure all, but it was a noticable improvement over not having a heat source on the carb. It allowed me to run a lot more normal when it was sub zero temps. John

Yes, it works at my latitude and altitude. In fact, all engines w/ headers get a heat riser at my shop. It's just part of a proper header install.
Cruisers operating in the desert southwest may not find much need for it.

My problem with headers is that once the temperature gets below 75 degrees outside, especially if there is a high dew point or heavy humidity, it takes my cruiser a very long time to warm up to a temperature that allows the engine to run strong without the common cold engine symptoms.

Once it hits 75 degrees, I need to close off the cold air intake on my filter housing and have it suck from above the manifold. Unfortunately, since it takes a long time to heat up, the manifold doesn't start to push warm air into the carb unless I get to operating temperature to burn off any moisture and then drive for at least 5 minutes to get out the chills out of the engine. Doing this does help the engine warm up faster . . . sucking air from the manifold, but then it takes power since it will eventually start sucking warm air into the carb to loose power. (Cold air intake makes better power)

Anything to speed up the process would improve the time I have to first start my cruiser, go back inside, finish my coffee, and morning constitution before I can drive down the street. The filter housing is meant to be closed when things are frozen outside, not when a light sweatshirt is needed for a few minutes in the morning.

The kits look like they would be easy enough to fabricate for the 2F since it would just be a plate that is cut into a bowl with ports. But the F needs a plate that is cut into channels. I don’t have the tools to do this. If someone could make one like the kit I am looking for, I would rather pay a Mudder than a company.

heat riser

Just installed mine and it was just a flat plate with the two fittings in it ---on a 2f the manifold has a hollow in it for the water to fill up

If your rig is taking a long time to warm up have you checked the thermostat? Maybe it is stuck open? I am thinking the riser is to prevent carb icing and wont necessarily make it run better until it is warmed up. If the water is staying fairly cold cause the thermo is open the plate wont help it warm up faster I wouldnt think

here is a pic:

In addition to the fluid heat riser, I run a 2F aircleaner that has the flapper to direct air intake from cold to warm air. As I run a header, I had to fab up a little piece to allow the aircleaner (when in the warm air mode) to draw intake air warmed by the header. The piece I made has an elongated fishmouth to cover as much of th header tube as possible and a welded tab to allow attaching it to the tube with a hose clamp. Simple little piece made from aluminized muffler pipe. It works very well to prevent carburetor icing. HTH

The second pic shows the piece a little better, although the pic is too small:doh:

ED, the 8/73 I have has an air filter that can either draw air from the back off the driver's head light or when closed, draw air direcly over the header/manifold. I was planning on getting the heat riser for a CHristmas present, but while at Surf-N-Turf, my tent gave up the ghost so my wife bought me a new one and busted my present budget. I'll have o get one a little later.

How does your warm up with both mods?

I was planning on getting the heat riser

Do you currently run a header? I can make you the piece for the header, but don't know how it attaches to the aircleaner.

Ed

ED, yes I have headers and I think the part you are talking about is already built into my F air filter. It is a tube that faces directly over the manifold (like the tube that faces the light for cool air. About the only thing at this point is to get the water heater.

Just measure the diameter of your header tube and I'll make you one....for Christmas.;)
The fluid heat riser for a 2F intake is really simple, but for an F intake there is not really a cavity in the menifold so you have to use a thicker piece of aluminum and machine out a cavity in it. Very easy to run a 2F manifold, especially in your case where you use the F aircleaner. Carb will sit slightly lower and slightly outboard, but I think your aircleaner can make the adjustment for both.

Ed, cool of you. What do you have in mind? Maybe an extension tube from the end of my air filter intake above the manifold to get it closer to the heat?

I am gonna play hookie from work tomorrow and will measure then. Do you want inside or ouside diameter?

WHen are you gonna make it to this side of the country to enjoy some of the Sierra trails?

OD of the header tube, but can you post a pic of where it attaches to the aircleaner? I used to do it with a cutoff wheel on a die grinder, but now I have a plasma cutter:eek:

Ed:cheers:

Can I borrow the plasma for a few days? Mind shipping it too? :)

WHen my son goes to bed, I'll run out and take a few pics for you tonight and get the OD for you.
