getting tired of frozen washer jets and a dirty windscreen.

does the 100 have heated jets? anyone come up with a solution?
 
I have not done it yet but I have been thinking about it. We may be shooting a snowboard movie in either Breckenridge or June Mountain and I will be driving there and using the LX. Besides we have a place in Mammoth that we frequent so this little number will go on soon:

why not try the rain-x wwf. it hasnt frozen on me yet, keeps rain-x on the windshield all year long and better than the cheep blue water in a bottle from auto zone.
 
methanol, alcohol, rain-x doesn't help with the ice that is already on the windshield...or does it? I don't know but am assuming. Thats why I was getting the wwf heater.
 
I wrapped the wwf line around the upper firewall heater hose. That way, with the heat on in the winter the wwf is heated before it hits the windshield. The first few squirts are cold, but once the truck is warm the wwf does a good job de-icing the windshield.

i would think your problem is your washer fluid. As you're in the uk, the widely available stuff from halfords etc is only rated to -5, which is pretty much useless. keep an eye out for stuff that's good to -25, then all you'll need is a quick squirt of de-icer to clear ice off in the morning and then you'll be good for the rest of the day.
 
We buy -40 windshield washer fluid...you could add add methonal to the low grade stuff.

BTW To properly work your unit should be at operating temps and heater on Defrost to start with...this heats up the windscreen and now your washer fluid will work wonderfully. Once your windscreen is warmed up you switch to either defrost/floor or pure floor to heat your cold feet.

Using washer fluid on a cold windscreen is a waste.
 
x2 on the Rain-X wwf. It works great.

The problem of the nozzles icing up is nearly eliminated using these extra strength ice-cutting fluids (Rain-X, alternatives, or mix your own). The problem is supercooling when you're moving down the road, so some of the conventional ww fluid nonetheless freezes on the nozzle. Then it builds up at the edges of the windshield.

In some case, extremely heavy snowfall could cause a similar problem, but this lack of visibility when driving in such conditions tends to occur around the same point where you should probably get to safe place off the road anyway.

I don't have any direct experience with the HotShot, although I think it's been on the market for awhile. The master fleet mechanic in the garage I used to work at asked me to do some research on such fixes for our semis one bad winter years ago (early 90s?)

It turned out that going with the good fluid was the trick for our fleet, which only occasionally confronted really bad winter conditions that caused us to look into it. Plus a lot quicker to fill the wwf tanks at the fuel island than ordering and installing 85 units or whatever it was we had in the fleet at the time.

But under the right conditions, the heaters do work well from what I've heard if you feel that a hardware vs a software solution is better;)
 
If you are feeling adventurous, you can see if any scrap yards have any 1994ish or newer Mercedes and use all the parts of it. It uses engine coolant to heat the reservoir and fluid lines are heated via an electrical wire that is inside the washer lines.

I had found this about 3 years ago and wanted to add this to my vehicle but when you go to order it, it tells you "Due to popular demand we are temporarily out of stock," and it has said this for the past 3 years. DO YOU HAVE ONE??? I was thinking this is what all the GMC vehicles had on there cars a few years back that they recalled and that is why you are not able to order them? I want to do this but if it is what was on the GMC vehicles and was causing fires I will just go ahead and skip, but I do want somthing that would heat the w/s wiper fluid.

My b m w had heated washer jets. They were always drying out and getting full of dried fluid, took an hour to take off and clean. That was before modern fluids were available. I would go with Rained.
 
the fluid in the tank hasnt frozen on me as yet, its the nozzles that freeze, sometimes they stay frozen all day. with the amount of salt they put on the roads in this country within a couple of miles you cant see out of the windscreen.

i used to have a car with heated nozzles that came on with the heated mirrors. thats why i thought maybe the 100 had a plug and play solution;).

the hotshot looks very interesting, any further information on getting hold of one?

I've seen the green Rain-x in the stores but it's only rated to +32 degrees. Is this the stuff you all are talking about?
 
@ 150 degrees F wouldn't you crack an extremely cold soaked windshield?

I recall a family friends wife pouring hot water on her windshield to melt ice when I was a kid & the window cracked.

BTW - The Rain-X cold weather washer fluid is Orange in color.
 
Come to think of it, for those of you in really cold climates, you could just get some motorcycle/snowmobile heated hand grips and attach them to the washer bottle holder. You could wire that to the seat heater switch (and same heat elements placed on back of side mirror glass) for a simple solution.
