Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the site so I apologize if I'm posting my question/concern in the wrong area - still figuring things out.

My spouse and I recently picked up two 2021 LC 200s, and we noticed right away that the front driver and passenger headrests have a pretty awful rattle. The rattle gets much worse as the headrest goes up, but some rattling can still be heard when the headrest is completely down. I was thinking the issue was unique to my vehicle until my spouse's vehicle arrived and started rattling as well. I'm debating on whether or not to take them to the dealership, but since this seems to be a common issue I'm not sure what all they can do.

I'm reaching out to see if anyone else has experienced this issue (I've seen other posts related to seat rattles and some rattling on older LC 200 models), and I'm wondering if anyone has come up with a solution.

Thank you!

Mine also had the rattle. Pulled out both head rests and bent the posts to the outside so when reinserted, they were under a fair amount of tension. I ain't got no more rattle. I did this months ago and still good regardless of position.

I just did this on Friday after reading your post….2 days rattle free.

Good to know about this. It sounds like your headrest rattle was actually where the post entered into the headrest cushion. My rattle sounded like it was where the headrest post enters into the seat.

Interesting, I thought my solution fixed the rattle. And it mostly did. After adding the rubber bands, I heard a new fainter rattle, it was coming from the post area of the seat. I think that was always there but the other rattle was louder. So I widened the posts as suggested, and the "new" rattle reduced in volume too. I will widen it a bit more.

So IMHO there are 2 rattles in the Headset area.

I just got an update from my local Toyota dealer. Parts guy had to make a couple calls but here’s the latest. They are still awaiting the parts. Apparently these parts have not been manufactured yet and Japan is still working on that. I’m told there are other dealerships awaiting the same thing. I did not get a time estimate but that I should just keep calling back every couple weeks for an update. I’ve also attached a picture of the parts that they ordered for me.

Thanks for posting this. I have had the same rattle and it's driving me nuts. One of the reasons I traded the Raptor for the new LC was because the Raptor rattled and squeaked like crazy. New my LC was perfectly quiet but headrests soon started to rattle. I just sent this to my dealer, hopefully they can handle the warranty for me.

Are you still rattle free?

Yep, still quiet

Headrest rattle is finally fixed! Toyota replaced the headrest and mount tubes. Pic shows parts ordered. All under warranty.

Thank you for posting this information. I just bought my ‘21 a couple months back and the rattling has been driving me nuts. I also lower the passenger headrest to dampen it. I ordered the parts however it looks like you might need to remove the seat leather to get to the posts. I’m leery to do that as the LC is still so new for me and don’t want to mess something up and regret it. Do you think this would still be covered under warranty? It’s past the 3 year mark obviously. I kept my 4th gen 4R and its doesn’t have any rattling or creaks.

I’m pretty sure it’s isolated to the headrest posts particularly in the front passenger seat. It only has 20k miles on it and I had a pre purchase inspection don. The tires on it are new as well.

I called the dealership yesterday and since it’s past the 3/36k warranty it would be out of pocket. I think I’ll just save the parts for now and try bending the metal inserts as others have mentioned.

I don’t know if this would help or not but if you have any need for a molle seat back organizer type thing this may be an option as they typically support themselves with a strap around the headrest posts and that may be enough tension to keep the rattle at bay.

That’s a great idea! I’ll consider getting a couple as they are quite handy.

mine has this rattle too, drives me nuts. Stops rattling if I have a passenger. I brought it up with the dealer at around 15k miles and they refused to do anything about it. Said that would be something that needed to be reported upon delivery. But they were willing to replace all of the roof gutter rubber pieces since several had gone missing - go figure.

Same! She’s my dream ride and I’m fortunate to have realized this dream after years of obsessing. I have a lot of sound deadening in my 4R and it amazes me how quiet the Landy is stock. I’ll find a way to dampen it thanks to the recommendations in this thread.

yeah i traded a 2020 Raptor for my 200 - Raptor was fun but rattled and squeaked like a clown making balloon animals.

The 200 is so quiet, except for that dang headrest when the seat is empty. And my fridge - favorite mod, but just enough rattle to drive me nuts. I need to find a fridge/slide combo that doesn't rattle.

For anyone tracking, I had the rattle and now dont.

Hand bent the posts on each headrest out very slightly thanks to this thread, alternated front seat placement (they both fit tighter alternated for me) and cut pick-em foam to fill the headrest cavities around the posts, in the headrest. Just shoved a bit in there and it stays.... would need to needle nose plyers it out if I want to re-angle the headreasts but the silence is GOLDEN. To be honest, I think the headrest foam around the posts did 90+ % of the solution for me. Then, placed remaining pickem foam under the second row seats near the latches. That was also helpful in eliminating some washboard rattles. Finally, used some remaining strips of noise deadening foam in the panels behind the second row seats. Opposite your back, the cover hits plastic ridges and taping it resuts in a rattle.... so, we are lucky that eggcrate foam fit in seamlessly. I used a trim tool, eliminating what I hope to be the last opportunity for acoustically annoying rubs.

So far, so good.... in the process, I found a bunch of metal bits under the front seats, where the carpet has open space. I can say with confidence the first owner had kids. A nail, a tin of putty, a keychain, etc. When I found that stuff, I thought I had it.... but again, foam or a towel under the second row bench and foam around the headrest stems have me sitting in silence (outside the roof rack, 33s, etc etc).

Thanks to this thread for the direction!

Does your rack have a wind fairing? After I installed one DIY it made a significant difference. Like around an 80% improvement back to stock quietness.

Another option is a light bar to fill the gap. Cannot vow for improvement of noise with that setup and it means getting a wire to the same via the back door. I do not need that light so went the wind fairing route, however it is worth considering as well.

Will look into it - thanks! I remember seeing your post earlier....

I dont currently run a fairing. I run the platform on the stock rails and it starts just behind the sunroof so my noise has been very manageable from the roof. Box placement really matters when I need to run it (all the way back is loud, 3 inches forward is quiet). Ironically, I run the pioneer platforms because thule aero bars allow box flex/vibration with their own boxes on 200's at 70+ mph.... where as the pioneer platform can give the box multiple points of contact with some well placed rubber. Thankfully those thule bars fit the wife's ride so all good :)

As an update - when my blower was replaced, a clip behind the radio power button wasnt engaged - a strong push on the dash allowed it to catch - SCORE!

Pickem foam in headrest cavities works great. Replaced the foam under the rear row of seats with two tennis balls cut in half and spread out near latches. Better tension, less fussy to setup... smell of them drives my lab a little nuts but oh well.

There's a great Japanese principle that perfection is an illusion - that's helpful to me :)
