So for a number of weeks now the headlights on start up seem to be acting a little weird. I seem to remember a sort of smooth down and up on start up - leveling. Now just a blink and no movement. The auto headlight level warning light does come on then goes off during start up. Is there anything I can check to see why the leveling is not working?

Have you added a lift? Any recent hard wheeling that could have damaged the rear height sensor?

If not, it could be the headlight leveling ECU. It's on the passenger side behind the glove box.

Doesn't sound like it's your rear height control sensor (auto adjusts headlights) because it will throw a constant warning light until it's repaired. A related thread on that one:

If you have access to Techstream, you could see if there are any fault codes for it.

Most OBD2 scanners (e.g. OBD Fusion) should also be able show the faults if you don't have Techstream.

Ok, I can’t get rid of the double quote - sorry.

No wheeling and I’m all stock. No mods.

Where is the rear height sensor located?

The ecu behind the glove box - interior or in the engine bay? Tks.

The ECU is interior - E121 below on right.

The rear height control sensor is on driver side near rear shock.

I don't think it's you rear height sensor.

There are some fuses in the engine bay associated with it. However, if they were blown you would get additional warning lights.

See if you can pull any DTC codes using an ODB reader.
Could also try disconnecting the battery for an hour, reconnect and see if that resolves it.

Tks. Can you recommend a reliable easy to use obd reader? Also, is removing the fuse the same as disconnecting battery? If not, and I disconnect battery will I have to reprogram radio, seats , etc?? Tks.

You will need to disconnect the negative terminal on the battery in the engine bay. You may need to reprogram radio presets and seat memory.

Disconnect it for about 30 mins. It may resolve your issue.

A lot of us use this reader:
Amazon product ASIN B073XKQQQW
You will also need to get an app/software for the reader.

ODB Fusion is a good one for iPhone and Android.

Rear height sensor seems intact and no damage. Ordered veepeak ble+. ETA about a week. Going to try that 1st. Will report back. Tks for the help!

Update - so I think this is not related , but, weird none the less..... there seems to be a little gremlin maybe running around.

I still have not done anything yet as I am waiting the the odb reader. Not even disconnected the battery. BUT, this am, not having used the car n a few days, noticed an " ! " in a yellow triangle on the center display when having the cameras engaged - for ex. when backing up. A full steering wheel turn to the right then the left cleared it. I have never seen this triangle warning before. Also noticing that the blue lined side width indicators are no longer showing in the display. Guessing those are an auto feature as I dont see where to turn them off / on ??

As mentioned - will post more on the auto leveling when I get the reader. Have to say, I dont see much user instructions for the Fusion app !?!

Was wondering if you could maybe give me a step by step of what to do after the veepeak and obd fusion are on and connected ? 2nd question - I ran the scan with the ignition on and it took about 10 minutes. Is is ok to do this with the engine running? After the scan and messing around a bit I started the car and it sounded a little weak in the start. 2018 with original battery…. Not sure if I am looking in the right spot for any error messages? I ran diagnostic scan but no error came back. I also purchased the Toyota extra pack. Unrelated - a you tell me where the water level on battery should be ? Up to bottom of plastic rim?? Tks much!!

So Im using network C which I see has HL Auto Leveling. Ran the Diagnostics and got no trouble. codes returned - if this is correct. Default Dash does have a battery reading. Low while using app but 14.1V while engine off not under load. I did check the water level and from what I gather the dealer is not suppose to check during scheduled maintenance or they just haven't. I had to add over a cup of fluid. HL Auto Leveling still not working. Guess try the battery disconnect?

So this is from the other day..... Still looking for ideas on that to check for the auto leveling not working.

So im still trying to figure out why the Auto Leveling isn't working. Has anyone else disconnected the battery to re-activate the leveling function?

Anyone else have any ideas on what to check??

Well battery disconnect made no difference in getting the auto leveling to work. Had this on start up / never seen this message before.

Now what to try??

Interesting. So no faults found with the scanner and disconnecting battery didn't help. I would expect to see faults if the Headlight Leveling ECU was having issues. I'm not sure what else to try.

Hopefully others can chime in.

I guess I’m scanning right - after connecting to reader, I pick network c and run diagnostic. Does it make a difference if I’m on accessory or ignition mode? Don’t think I can have engine started for the scan.

Well I just rescanned to double check and all clear again. Had to scan in ignition mode as accessory mode lights don’t go on. Think I have that right - anyway I scanned in whichever mode the lights went on with…

Some of the things you’re describing give me the feeling that your battery and alternator should be checked. I’m not sure if a bad battery or charging system would prevent the auto leveling feature from working, but they’re arguably a lot more important to have functioning correctly.

Can you tell me what the resting battery voltage should be with engine off? Then voltage with it running ??
