How do relays work ? and how do I wire them up ? DO I need one per headlamp or is one OK . changing lite bulbs and fuse is I am ok with but for me.... wireing I am little Ifee !
I think I was sick or the day in shop class or......:confused:

Okay, I read it, but I'm still confused. What exactly does a relay do for an older FJ? Does it make the headlights brighter?

I didn't mention what wattage of hologens that you intend on installing. If they are the same wattage that you are replacing, you shouldn't need to install a relay. Halogens are going to be brighter, at the same wattage, than your old sealed beams.

A relay is like a high current remote switch. You supply 12V fused power to the relay. This is generally straight off the battery with heavy gauge wire (10-12 gauge depending on your load and relay capacity). The power for your headlights will then come from your battery through the relay to your lights. The relay is switched on/off with a "signal" wire (generally your stock headlight wire). This signal has a very low amp draw compared to your headlights.

So you benefit from full power to your headlights (13.8V in a running vehicle) not the 10-12 you may be getting now (you lose some of the power as it travels through your wiring harness, switch, and connectors). It also should cause less stress to your headlight switch (mainly if you have high power lights).

Oh yeah, don't forget to upgrade the ground too.

I believe the Halogen are street legal replacments do not know the wattage looks like I need to figure out my load first so how do that ? once I figuer that out ?:confused: I come off the batt with a fused 10 gage to relay , then the old power wire to head lamps use as switch to the relay, then new 10 gage to head lamp for power and new 10 gage for ground. but do I tye in the outher Headlight off the same relay ? so far I think I got it ! :) I have time to round up parts and figure out load ? I am still preping body for paint. lowenbrau you got an PM

The formula Power (watts)=Current * Voltage. So a 100 watt bulb would draw 8.3 Amps, if you had 2 for headlights you would draw around 16 which is well within a typical 30Amp automotive relay's capacity. Both lights on one relay. You may want one for your low beams as well. Here is a site picked off Pirate that may help with general electrical stuff. Disregard the jeep reference.

I think you need two relays, one for low beam and one for high beam, you should be able to drive both L and R lights of one relay.

I have not done the relay upgrade, but did go to silverstars -wanna see the difference go here.....

One relay for the high and one for the low beams and run both sides off the same relays OK ! ..... I think ...:doh:
THANKS JC :cheers:

GE has a new halogen version similar to the Sylvania Silver Star they call it Nighthawk. H6024NH is the code. My GE rep gave me a case of them last week.

+1 on the relay idea. I rewired my electrical system on the jeep and the relays seemed to help. I'd also recommend changing from the sealed beam headlights to a hella H4 reflector housing. Uses normal H4 bulbs in a reflector, so the beam pattern is a lot better, plus you get a much wider selection of bulbs to choose from. I picked up my reflectors from here

Rice = nice link....

TEQ if your rig was done by CCOT (in another thread) you probably don't need it as they went through the wiring.

:cheers:
