Head unit install question...

Anyone have to cut away some of the dash to get an Alpine, or any other head unit to fit correctly? The factory brackets attached to the head unit perfectly, but when I put the dash back on, the headunit doesn't stick out far enough for the snap-on trim-ring to fit properly. I figured I'd throw this out there before I plug the dremel in.

Never had this problem before. The Alpine units that I know of should all fit the double din hole on the 80 series perfectly. Post up some pics because something doesn't sound right.

From your description it sounds like you need to move the whole thing out (toward the inside of the truck) more. Or move the brackets forward so that is sits with more of the face exposed. IIRC there are several mounting points for those brackets...are you already on the furthest forward?

Sorry to piggy back, but i just went stereo pricing to get an alpine head unit with the iPod hookup so i can run my ipod directly from my head unit

the installer told me it was a fairly involved installed because they needed to bypass the factory amplifier and that it wasnt a direct plug and play setup. anyone care to elaborate. i was thinking of trying this install my self but dont want to get over my head

does the anti theft code ONLY apply to the factory stereo?

I just put a new apline unit in this weekend in my 91 FJ80. I had the amplified system. I removed the factory amplifier and plugged the wiring harness from the alpine into the stock wiring for the speakers.

Throw away the trim piece around the face of the Alpine, you don't need it.

As for the ipod install, it's not to difficult to do, though it took me a couple of hours becuase I was running RCA cables for future amplifer installs and also installed XM radio as well.

So the plug is the same from the head unit adapter to the amplifier adapter?

So in theory the amplifier is bypassed simply by unplugging it and connecting the plug that was going into it for input, into the plug going into it for output! If i am correct in my assumption (might not be explaing it correctly), Tweeter wanted $89 to unplug my amplifier! Yikes!

Mangler....Just order it from Crutchfield. They send everything you need, sometimes its worth the extra 20 bucks. Their tech support walked me through which plugs to unplug for the amps. Its fairly simple. Take out the glove box and section of dash with the passenger side speaker before you call, the amp is back there.

That being said, you need to extend the wires between the head unit and the adapter harness by about 18 inches to stretch from the head unit to the location of the old amp.

I am not sure if this is the same on the 93.

I was just on alpines website and it says that the head units dont have enough memory for large GB ipods and that not all of the playlists and songs would come in. kinda defeats the purpose

I didn't install it this time around, I don't own an Ipod, I have a shuffle instead, so I wanted the Aux input.

I looked at it, it seems pretty straight forward to install, I think a set of RCAs and a dedicated cable, shouldn't be to hard. you could probably mount in where the factory amp use to be and then run the line to the ipod into the glove box.

I guess the trim ring is just not supposed to be used with this type of dash. I don't like how you can see around the edges of the head unit though. As for the rest of the questions on this thread. I hooked up the Alpine to the two unused harnesses behind the factory unit using the basic Toyota two piece wiring harness you can get at any car audio store. Just matched up the colors and everything works great. I also unplugged the two harnesses going into the factory amp to the right of the glovebox, just to be safe. All speaker continue to work except for the sub. Today I'm going to remove the amp all together and mount the Ipod interface there.
