HDJ81 too much boost? blew the dipstick

Hi Guys,

I have a 1992 Toyota land cruiser HDJ81 w/ slushbox with a GTurbo HD-G300 and a PDI front mount. (327K kms)
recently add gauges so I can turn up the boost and fuel.

here's the problem I set the pump compensator spring to 20 psi and turned the pin to max fuel.
All is fine at 15-18psi (wastegate pressure) it's a clean tune not a lot of smoke and low EGTs.
Then I got greedy and added a manual boost control to turn it up to 20-22psi.
After a like 10 mins of driving it started to smell like oil and I popped the hood and it looked like the Valdez sank in my engine bay and it blew oil out of the dipstick and blowing smoke out of the cap. (Hello my friend Blow-By:cheers:)

here's where it gets weird.
started her up this morning no smoke or blow-by out of the fill hole.
did turn down the boost to the wastegate pressure and drove it around for 30 mins. Still fine no sign of blow-by:bang:

does it need a rebuild or does it just not like boost?

Do you have a restrictive catch can? Any blockages to the PCV? If it gets blocked your oil will exit via the dipstick.

doesn’t seem like it’s restrictive, but I did remove it. Should I turn up the boost again and see what happens without a catch can?
 
If it’s the factory engine you should have a 1HDT. You only have to pull the glow plugs mate. Might as well stick some new ones in there while your at it.
 
If it had a catch can when you turned up the boost and it puked oil, try running it with out the catch can
Run the PCV hose into an open plastic drink bottle and see if anything collects in the bottle
 
As per FSM specifications, compression pressure should be 356-498 or more. I have seen numbers as high as 510. The main thing I always look for is variations between cylinder pressures, although some variation between cylinders is normal, if it’s still within spec (71psi).

I’ll try that tomorrow, but I think it’s blowing the rings at 20psi because she’s loose old whore, so might as well face my fate and compression test it.

😂 watch this thing blow 500 and still have blow-by. This truck has been an Enigma since I imported it from the mother land like a old grandma protesting about that god damn new technology. Maybe I’ll sign her up for bingo and water aerobics.
 
Update, even though my friend who owns a diesel shop said it's just the PCV being clogged.
I am gonna compression test it anyway.

is there a certain way you remove the fuel cutoff solenoid without damaging it?
or do you remove a fuse?
 
Yeah if your catch can is too restrictive something will blow and that something is usually and hopefully your dipstick.
yeah, that is what I am hoping for the outcome but before turning up the boost I'm gonna still compression test it.
 
You don’t have to do anything to the solenoid itself. Just unplug the grey wire connector down on the side of the pump. In your case, it may be a greasy black connector due to its proximity to the dipstick ;)
