I was advised to do a turbo rebuild as I wanted a few mods done but the shop said I needed to get the turbo rebuilt first. So I went and did that. Turns out the turbo was fine but in the process of reinstaling the turbo I have encountered a new issue. The alternator seems to have issues. Note- we also cleaned the engine bay before reinstaling the turbo. So we sprayed degreaser of some sort and water all over.

All the lights on the dash are now lit up after the instal of the turbo- I hear this is called the christmas tree affect and often comes from a loose connection or from dirty water getting into the plug. The alternator is not charging the batteries when the truck is running. I had to get it jumped yesterday and while I was driving it home the radio turned off and the lights dimmed. I have since pulled the plug and cleaned it, as I heard this is sometimes the cause of this, but it doesn't appear to have helped as all the lights are on. I have it charging right now so we will see if it holds a charge tomorrow. If it is not solved tomorrow I think the next step is to pull it out and take it to a shop. Logical next step or should I do something else first? Also, I am from Vancouver, do you recommend any specific shops that can look at it and rebuild it? Should I get it upgraded?

Should I get it rebuilt or get a new one? Any ideas besides a car wrecker or where I could get one? Thanks for you help.

If you get a new one,get one from a 7* series 1HZ,they have a higher output. I would probably take yours to see if it can be fixed first. Any shop should be able to do it,its just a Denso alternator and the same as any other toyota ,just bigger

Just pull it. It is not too much to have it gone through. Alternators wear out. There is a shop on East Broadway across from Davidson BAttery called 'Ashnat Starter' Good young-ish guy named Eugen- did mine and all my heavy duty stuff... Or the shop at Merritt and Imperial that Ateb uses- which means they likely have seen more of these than anyone else in Western Canada.

there is brighouse in richmond by the casino too. is it just dirty brushes and armeture, if its not a bearing issue a good clean usually works.

I had an oil seal leak so I got that fixed and they sprayed and degreased the engine. The resulting spray and grease flying around caked up and shorted out the alternator as I drove away from the shop. Cooked. Done.

The shop paid for the alternator and I paid the labor to re and re it with a new one.

Craig.

Great thanks for the help guys. I pulled the alternator and took it to a shop. They replaced the brushes and the slip rings and cleaned it up all nice and good as new. It now works great and I longer have the lights on the dash.

Hmmm In the process of pulling my Alternator for RnR to solve Christmas Light issue. Anyone know a good Denso shop in Edmonton or Nisku area?
