All,
I am compiling research to change out an old radiator in my HDJ81. The HDJ81 had an A442F transmission fluid cooler (also heater) incorporated into the main engine coolant radiator and want to know which transmission lines are which To and From the cooler. See pictures. My thoughts are the line on the right side of the picture is outflow (hot) To the cooler and the left (cool) is From the cooler. It looks like there is a switch of some sort attached to the right line, could that be for the ATF warning light? Tracing these lines can be difficult. Any input would be most appreciated. Thank you.

I believe you're right, that's what I figured from the parts diagram:

Hmmmm, so the temperature sensor for the ATF warning light is on the inlet pipe?

Check out these pictures from logicbeyondreason…….it made sense looking at his pictures and getting under my truck and looking at the lines. The “hot” line (from the transmission) enters the bottom of the radiator on the right side (drivers side on the HDJ81) and exits on the left side (cooled) and goes back to the transmission correct?

The blue pipe in the above pictures is the “cooled” fluid heading back to the tranny and the “red” pipe is the “hot” From the tranny correct? Overthinking happens but I don’t want this to become a mess as I am also trying to add an external tranny fluid cooler in the spot in front of the engine radiator where the US 80 series has the cooler mounted.

Did you ever get the cooler installed? Was it difficult? Are the lines easy to locate from underneath? I'm looking at getting a Hayden cooler, but need to figure out if this is something I can do myself. Have done an installation on my previous vehicle and it was not too hard.

Yes I did. I went with Wholesale Automatics “universal” transmission cooler. I used Gates green stripe hose for the connections. I will find out soon how “warm” the fluid gets (or doesnt) as gauges are being installed.

The 2 diagonal brackets work but I need to find a better solution. There are 2 lower brackets as well which work but a better solution needs to be looked at.

Yes, once I studied the lines in the above picture, I found which were which and marked them with blue and red/orange tape in several places along the lines. The lines are pretty easy to locate, they run under the power steering pump and injection pump on the left side of the engine. (RHD)

Was there any issue with the bend radius when you attached the new hose from your transmission cooler to the factory cooler outlet? Assuming you are using 3/8" hose. My Hayden cooler comes with 11/32" hoses, so wondering if it will be a very tight fit.

I don’t think there was an issue, I had plenty of hose so making sure it wasn’t kinked or bent was not a problem.
