Hello all,

I noticed when I was driving yesterday up a hill and at about 1900-2000 RPM that it would not hold the RPM for very long, it would dip down a few hundred and there would be no obvious smoke out the back. The Turbo was still whistling away and no matter how much I put the hammer down it wouldn't clear up the problem, once I got to the top of the hill it seemed to run fine as when on flat sections I don't push it, I usually crawl up to speed.

Fast Forward to today and going up yet another hill and she started to do the same thing although this time when I came to the stop sign she died, I rolled the truck to the side and put her in park and tried to start her, but all I got was a few coughs but she quit, I waited a few seconds and she started right up and I continued home.

I am going to figure its something to do with my fuel filter? I have a new one sitting right here, should I just throw it in or try something else first?

Truck has 84k on it and its bone stock.... I don't think its otherwise as paperwork leads me to believe that's its real kms.

Cheers and thanks in advance
Christian

After what you described, I would check the throttle/transmission ( not sure of proper name) kick-down linkage .

My 90 81 with 260,000 KMs on big long hills will sit at the RPM and gear that I approached the hill with, bog down and then kick in the throttle kick-down, sets you back in the seat and there you go up the hill.

Next time that you go up the same incline, drop the tranny in 3rd gear and see what the out come is, that should help narrow down the cause and effect a bit more.

My 81 loves to wait for the last second to kick-down.

Try 3rd gear up the same hill and see what the cruiser does in that same situation.

Update, so I went ahead and took out the filter as per the FSM and man was there a lot of gunk in the filter, maybe about and inch or two of water and black gunk in the bottom of it (kinda looked
Like fat slugs).

Anyone have any luck with the primer pump thing on the top of the filter unit? I sat there for 5 min and nothing. I will go out and get some diesel to fill the filter up.

I was recently on a trip with a stock HZJ truck that had similar problems. Field testing we found that almost zero fuel was making it through the second filter. We bypassed that and used three Napa Filters for a temporary fix and the truck ran just fine.

On my truck (FJ60 with a 1HZ) I had uphill sputter-power problems for a while. I attributed it to a dirty fuel filter and was changing them out about every 1,000 miles or so (way too frequent). BUT that very well may be the problem. On the 60 I also have a pusher pump back at the rear tank the pumps fuel up/through my fuel filter and to the IP. That pump has gone out once and I was dead in the middle of the trail, sucking air.

I believe factory diesel set ups have that pusher pump already installed. If that's true, perhaps your pusher pump is failing?

Moral - you might consider the entire fuel track and make sure everything is free flowing. Adding the pump at the tank also allows you to bleed the injectors electrically instead of manually. It's a $25-$125 item, just a simple low pressure fuel pump and small filter.

Side note: I find that I need to use my glow plugs every day for a few seconds (longer when cold) to achieve that one-click start on the engine - - - I think it may be half glows and half pressurizing the fuel delivery system to the pump - since the fuel pump is clicking away when I glow.

Water and sludge, that says a lot. Do you keep your tank filled up, or do you wait till it gets near empty to do a fill up. Where do you get your diesel from usually? Try to go to places that sell a lot of diesel. I have filled up at isolated places on road trips, and notice a big difference in power loss, and I filled up a jerry can as well at another place, and it had rusty water sitting at the bottom. The primer on top of the fuel filter should pump a lot of fuel through it. You might have some sludge in the tank, and when your on an incline it's getting picked up.

I have only had the truck for 4 months but there are a few times when I'm sitting near E, I can only imagine what my dads looks like then because he is always driving in that low range :S.

The past few times i have been fueling at a petro can by my place in coquitlam, and there always seems to be people behind me waiting for diesel. I have filled up at other locations (chev, husky/Mohawk) but I wouldn't know how much they go through.

Would a tank train be in order?

Hey Man - Just curious: did you ever change the fuel filter in the past? Or, since you've owned it? If not, I'd just change it and run a whole small bottle of fuel conditioner of you're choice (search on here). Then check her again after a tank or two. The conditioner should help seperate any remaining water in the system. If you're still getting water or stalling, than go from there.

How long did it sit before you bought it?

No I didn't, but prob should have.... as well as the other list of things I want to do.

As for sitting I don't know. I bought if off a guy who had got it in Jan/Feb 2010 from a small dealer here in Port Coquitlam. I don't think he drove it very much because it sat on craigslist for a long time as the price was too high and when I went to go look at it it was sitting in a garage with no insurance.

Thanks for the tip!

Cheers

OK, the fuel tank has a filter, it is a plastic mesh affair and can get clogged. Have a look at this https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/370046-fuel-gauge-fault-found.html#post5366459 I could not get a new one so I gently cleaned off the worst of the crap and put it back. I then used injector cleaner in the fuel system for a few weeks whilst waiting for my new sender unit to arrive, if you check out the date of the postings between the dirty filter pics and the date I fitted my new sender you can see the cleaner really sorted it out. The filter under the bonnet again was full of crap and I changed it out a couple of times over the three month period. It seems these cars are so reliable some people do not bother with decent servicing so things like this soon catch up with the next owner. The 'lift' pump is built into the main IP so is that is the problem then a rebuild is a possible bill coming up although some fit aan electric one as a cheaper alternative. I would go for the cleaning, checking pies are clear/connections, cleaning the tank filter, and repeat cleaning the under bonnet filter long before pulling the pump. I would however run a pipe from a clean can of fuel direct to the filter head and see if the hand primer pulls it up easily, if not replace it. if the fuel comes up easy then start pulling out the tank sender/filter.

Also FWIW if you do not live in a cold climate and need a new primer then buy the version without the fuel heater in it, this will save you more than a few quid.

Regards

Dave

the hand primer should prime it fairly quickly, if not it may be faulty, or you are sucking in air. check the filter and seals are fitted properly

Dave- Thanks for the link to the thread, mine could be clogged also but I think I will search the forum for a good injection cleaner first an see how that goes.

Mudgudgeon - when I replaced the filter I had to take the assembly apart as the filter was on so tight I couldn't take it off without a big set of pliers, now would this have caused the fuel in the supply line to empty it's self all the way back to the tank?

I tried the priming pump when I has it out and it put pressure on my finger so I would assume it works.

Just as a side note when I take my gas cap off to fill my tank there it sounds like it's sucking in some air but then stops, is this normal

I'm coming to Vancouver next week;Sept 13-17; I can meet you for coffee and you can look through my manual if you like. Might be of some help, but I think changing the filter and adding a fuel conditioner is the way to go.

Changing the filter should not require pumping for more then a few minutes. The worst case I had was getting a friend's Surf running at the port. It was bone dry and likely had been that way for a long time. It took about 15 min before i could get fuel when I tried to bleed it. I suspect yours make be faulty.

I'd also recommend that you drain your tank - in addition to cleaning the tank pick-up screen. You will likely find a lot of crud on the bottom. Wait until you are down to about 1/8 of a tank and make sure you have a big enough drop pan underneath - like an 18L one. I am sure you will find more water and likely algae growing as well.

If you want some help and get to know other local Cruiser owners, I suggest you join the local TLCA chapter, the Coastal Cruisers. Most of our members are oil burners. We meet once a month at EBI in Port Moody. Here's the thread for this month's meeting which is tonight. https://forum.ih8mud.com/ca-bc-coastal-cruisers/410789-september-9-coastal-cruiser-meeting.html

fuel problems.

you should be able to pull of the fuel line from the output of the filter when you are priming to see if your getting any fuel, no not recommended, safe or good for the environment but you get the idea...
Fred Holmes in Richmond has some really good product to run through your system to clean it.
regular filter changes are key and I agree with Safari, drain your tank, inspect for rust or corrosion or water or sludge (clean if necesary) and run cleaner/treatment through your entire system.
then after the first couple tanks, replace your fuel filter again... reispect. Go from there.

Good luck, keep us posted.

Meeting tonight at EBI in coquitlam...

Thanks for re help guys!

I think I'll head down and join the club, I'll be the somewhat clean blueish 81 with no front corner bumpers... I can tell you what happened there.....

Cheers,
Christian

There are a couple bluish greyish 81s in the club. You'll be right at home.

As for loosing the fender ends, it seems to be more and more in style with club members. Eventually it leads to something like a new ARB front bar. :D

I am usually fairly easy to pick out from the other club members - at least when I am in my rig.

Haha but how many loose them due to motorcycles hitting their rigs! :O

I should be easy to pick out, I'm 6'8" lol

I've often dreamed of running them over on the trails but never had the guts to do it. Did you get two at once or have to go after them each separately? Man if you hate quaders as much, you will likely have to do better than an ARB bar. :D

You'll fit right in with Ben <Dah_Hunter> at the IVOAC meet next week. How he is able to drive those little JDM tuner cars is beyond me.

See ya tonight.
