Hi all, i just purchased my first 80 series, a 1991 japanese import 1HD-T with e-lockers, i have owned a Nissan Patrol before this and also have an old 70 series that i use as a toy on the family farm.

The 80 was bought on the cheap, so it does have some quirks, the e-lockers don't engage (i'll have a crack at that myself and come back when that doesn't work out :)) and it seems to shake a lot at stand still, when in drive.

It seems like the shaking is caused by the engine trying to turn the gearbox with out being able to, it is very visible when looking at the high/low shifter, as it shakes quickly from side to side. I'm not sure weather this is normal though, as i have very little experience with autoboxes. The shaking disappears at something like a couple of km/h, and after that it's all smooth sailing. I made a video of it so you can see what i am talking about:

I tried holding on to the Hi/low shifter, and i can't hold it still, which makes me think the whole transfer case must be moving, it is even more noticeable when in reverse.

Possibly relevant details:
Car has 155.000km on the clock, no history to prove it, but judging by the overall condition of the car, it seems plausible.
No service history = no idea weather atf has been changed, ever, or if any work has been carried out on the gearbox.

So, what do you think ih8mud? is something wrong, or am i just looking for problems where there are none?

Thought i'd also ad that the gearbox feels very "jerky" at speeds up to a couple of km/h if i just release the brake while idling and in drive. If i press the accelerator it accelerates smoothly.

It's normal for the TC handle to vibrate when the truck is in drive at a standstill, but yours is moving much more side to side than mine does under the same conditions. I'd have a look under the truck and make sure the engine/tranny/TC mounts are in good shape. Does the engine idle smooth or does it seem like there's maybe a miss or something that would cause it to vibrate more than usual?

Have you popped the hood and looked at the engine while idling? In gear vs in park?

First guess would be a broken motor mount

Engine idles very smoothly, and everything feels/sounds great when in park. I'll have a look underneath tomorrow, when i have a buddy there to help out with standing on the break :)

Idle is less smooth when in drive, standing still, but i think that's just the slight load on the engine.

what I would check ..

1. lever bushing ( it is firm :? )

2. motor mounts

3. tranny mount

I never seen t-case lever shaking so badly and not the engine ..

Does the shaking go away with the rpm's increased? I see your tach is at 600. if you bring it to 800 does it calm down? if it does its most likley a fuel/idel adjustment as i had the same problem while increasing the fuel control without adjusting the idle pot at the same time. I bumped up my fuel and had to find the sweet spot with the idle and fuel. I took it to someone more familiar and they ironed it right out.

my 2 cents

Terry

I drove the car about 5km to school this morning, it was idling slightly high - 700s, and to begin with there were no problems, it seemed like the shaking started, and worsened with the drop in rpm, as the car warmed up, so you might have been on the money Terry. I'll try and play around with it some more tonight. Thanks for all the input guys!

So, i played around a little with the car this evening, and the engine is definitely vibrating, it looks like it's pulling on the left engine mount (drivers side on an american car), i'm not sure how much it should be able to lift on that side, but it does look like it's a lot. Regarding the idle speed, it's around 800rpm when in neutral, and drops to a little over 600 when in drive, with the brakes engaged. Can anyone confirm whether this is normal?

Is there no way it could be related to the actual autobox?

According to the FSM the idle when in neutral should be around 800rpm, but i'm not sure what it should be in drive, while breaking. I've also found that if i raise the rpm while in drive and breaking to 700 or so, where everything smooths out, when i pop it into neutral the rpm's rise to around 1000, which i think is a little on the high side.

Stupid question...does she roll forward easily at idle or do you need gas?

If she does not roll easy check for a seized brake caliper.

It rolls forward easy enough, and since it is a problem at total standstill, i'm thinking it not the break caliper.

The lower the RPM the more it will shake at a dead stop.

Try this out, next time your stopped place your left foot on the brake and bring your idle up.. What does it do?

It seems you have the ACSD (Assisted/Automatic Cold Start Devise) still installed, I would remove that too, do a search on mud about it.

It's almost certainly a broken motor mount

Does anyone have any ideas as to where i can get a new engine mount for a reasonable price? Toyota Denmark want around $350 for one. I've looked on some australian sites that sell them for around $40 but they say that the ones they sell don't fit auto hdj80's from 1990 to 1994 but much all other years and also some 100's 105's and 70's. Can anyone tell me what the difference might be? Maybe it's possible to modify one to fit.

Im not so sure it is a broken motor mount, I have a 1HDT that does exactly the same thing once the engine gets hot, the idle goes rough and that shakes the truck like that.

I've only had my truck a little while and knew of the problem when I bought it, I think its the injector nozzles as in my case it only happens when we get hot, but the trans shaking is exactly like yours when it happens.

the other thing that makes me think not mount is that it doesnt do it under load, ie driving awy on throttle, only in idle.

in the meantime try winding the idle up a little and see if you can get past the shake. I have the hand throttle on mine so if it gets too annoying in traffic I wind it up to a smooth idle in gear and just stand on the brakes harder.

when you are driving with load tranny it's under torque .. it will move ( clock ) and keep as is until you release the load .. so less chance to be free to shake ..
