Im looking at purchasing a 1999 HDJ100 with the 1HD-FTE and the automatic trans and just looking for any and all input on these vehicles from anyone who has one or knows about them. How is the drivability around town and highway? Fuel mileage? Pics, videos, etc.... Im going down the rabbit hole on these and going to look at one next week

Have you ever had a 100? Yes ? Then I'll skip over everything that's specific to any 100 that you probably already know.

I've equipped my HDJ100 for overland expeditions. Fully equipped, passenger, diesel, food and all, it weighs almost 7500 lbs.

I keep an Excel file for my consumption and for a total distance of 45,000 miles, I average 17.3 mpg (US gallon). The best ever on the highway : 21.2mpg. Worst-ever city driving: 15.2 MPG... (and soft sand beach driving: 10.7mpg)

In the worst-case scenario, you could easily drive 375 miles on one tank.

It's probably less responsive than the gasoline engine, but as I alway had diesel Landcruiser it all good for me and usually like to drive quietly at 2200 rpm which gives about 65mph (with 285/75R16).

The only negative point is when I'm on forest roads and there are many hills to climb and descend where I drive between 35mph and 45mph. The 4-speed transmission always seems to be looking for the right gear and keeps downshifting.

Like all large vehicles, it's not really suited to DD in urban areas. Still, you U.S. poeples like big vehicles ... then it won't be a problem

Ditto what bj70 said.....I have the gasser version & my mpg is close to his (hwy 17mpg). Out of ignorance I would have thought the diesel would be higher.

Also, I suspect they use salt to keep winter roads clear...thus pay close attention to body rust...I'm originally from Northern vermont...don't ask me how I know.

I am surprised to read that your UZJ100 has similar consumption to my HDJ100. For a vehicle as heavy as mine, I generally see 15mpg as the best performance (for gasser). 🤷🏻‍♂️

But, hey ! I’m not jealous, rather very happy for you 👊🏻

The 1HD-FTE is world class, about as good as you're going to get for a diesel outfitted cruiser. Mine burns almost no oil between oil changes with 10w30, zero smoke out the tail pipe (which means less soot going into your oil, and prolonging engine life) and fantastically better cold starts compared to the mechanical variants (1HD-T, 1HD-FT). The IP will also last twice as long as the 1HD-T/FT.

Only issue is the EGR gumming up the intake. You will likely need to do walnut blasting on the intake valves if you go ahead with it.

I run 265/75r16s and without the rooftop tent, best mileage was 22-23 MPG and with rooftop tent and loaded I'm around 17-18 MPG. Expect roughly 30% - 40% better mileage compared to the gasser.

I've had my 1998 JDM 100 VX with the 1HD-FTE for 9 months now and am loving it so far. Nearly 20 mpg in the city, super quiet, zero smoke out the tailpipe. I replaced all four of the AHC accumulators ("globes") and that made a big difference. Now I'm going to replace all the old rubber bushings underneath in an attempt to lessen some of the sway. Down the road I'd like to try and get a bit more power, first by cleaning the intakes as some suggest, and then eventually an EGR delete, bigger PDI intercooler, maybe even a Unichip-type solution.

I have a update HDJ100 (5spd auto), it is a much better car overall than the pre update (4spd) and I could encourage you to wait out for one. Much better driveline (smooth, better spread of gears, lower hwy rpm) and a improved interior along with some minor engine updates. Mine has all the gear on it, roof rack too, around town 18MPG, on the open road ~22MPG.

well, my 17mpg is only on looong highway crusing at 60mph (in think you said 23mpg for your diesel rig).

city i get a measly 12+/-.

Offroad, its 10mpg.

that's not my story and i'm not stickin' to it ⛽

I get 20+ mpg. Usually 30-40 minutes on a highway but with lots of idling to keep the a/c running.

Did yours have AHC? Did you remove it and/or what suspension are you running on it now?

I removed it and installed OME. Rear springs : 2864

1. There is 0 expertise for AHC here in Canada.
2. I was going to load my truck, I wanted to avoid reaching what AHC could handle.
3. I go to really, really isolated places. In Quebec, there are places absolutely far from civilization… I didn’t want to have any issues
