I'll start off by saying I searched the forums for this issue already and found plenty of threads about windshield rivets and sunroof drains. I have looked into both of these at this point and can somewhat confidently say they are not the cause.

Last night, we got a rather intense rain storm. Hours later, my 1 year old woke up at 3am (sick little guy) and my wife went to check on him. From his bedroom window, she noticed that the hazards were flashing and woke me up thinking someone tried to break into the car. I had already seen threads about water intrusion via windshield and sunroof and suspected that this may be what had happened. However, the floor of both passenger and driver sides were dry. I pulled power to the relay under the dash and went back to sleep.

Later this morning, I plugged the relay back in and at first it seemed fine. After a few minutes, the hazards came back on. Very rapid at first, then slowed down to regular speed. This time, with energy to spend on it, I pulled the fuse in the engine block. I drove to go pickup my new ARB bumper (hope to install that this weekend!) and on the way back I had the idea to blast the A/C as hard as I could to try and dry the cabin out. This was maybe an hour long round trip.

Once home, I put the fuse back in. No hazards. I began disassembly of the A-pillars, sun visors, front headliner area. Once I got all of that peeled back, I got out the garden hose and sprayed the windshield and roof down. Upon inspection of the interior, I didn't see any evidence of water and the hazards stayed off. Next I worked on the sunroof drains. I fed some weed wacker string down each one, but they didn't seem clogged. Poured a water bottle down each and it seemed to drain the water with ease, all the way out the bottom. Again I inspected the interior, but found no wetness and the hazards remained off.

So now I'm at a loss of what to check next. Some other variables for your consideration: I have a Toyota windshield. I did notice that on the passenger side there was a piece of molding(?) missing from the windshield. I hit that side extra hard with the hose, but still no noticeable water intrusion. I thought I remember someone posting that their tow harness caused this problem, so maybe I ought to look there next.

One last sidebar, I managed to snap the plastic roof rack cover on the passenger side while climbing up to look at the sunroof drains. Nothing is ever easy, is it?

Water intrusion can cause several gremlins to appear, just like in the movie..

These 2 jump boxes sitting right behind the passenger and driver's plastic covers on the inside of the fenders connect lots of modules, and when wet they go haywire. You can get to them and try to cleanup with some electrical contact spray, which increased in price x2 in a year for some reason.
The passenger side with the Ac fan on top isn't easy to get to, disconnect the battery while cleaning and wait till dry before reconnecting..

The plastic that covers the rack foot is important to keep direct water from the bolts that hold the rack, but you should use some teflon or sealer on the bolts as well since the plastic cover isn't 100% sealed.

Sunroof drains clog and the sunroof pan may overflow and spill water on the inside, right on top of the sunglass holder, and it'll drain on your wife's pants when you turn at speed.. ask me how I know.

Windshield sealing is a PITA and it seems that you got some caulk there that doesn't belong, so someone already tried to seal incorrectly.. I dread the job I'll have to do when I get my windshield reseal plan on the way.

In the meantime try to park under a canopy to avoid direct rain until you get time to deal with those issues.. good luck.

More hard rain last night, although this one had significantly less wind. No hazards and the interior is still dry. I think this is directing me towards that tow harness, so I'll have to inspect it sometime soon.

In the meantime, I've ordered new plastic covers for the rack... for the price, I should just get a better roof rack.
