Toast and jam somewhere in there. I suspect you let the smoke out of something significant.

My understanding is Lucas sells replacement wiring smoke but it may only be suitable for British vehicles......

Lucas, AKA The Prince of Darkness is the electrical supplier for British cars, which are notorious for issues.
"A gentleman should not be motoring about at night"

"The English drink warm beer because they own Lucas refrigerators."

:)

ah rite on.. been read though a lot of wiring threads on here and by the sound of things its the reg as there is on sorts anywhere i can find.

all so im kiwi and its a jap spec truck. if that helps.

The sad thing is the battery bank was disconnected whilst the engine was running. Sorry to say not a good plan. Hopefully the only damaged item is the regulator. Those are still available from Toyota. I do not know if the alternator is.

The blinking Christmas tree on the instrument cluster disturbs me, I must admit.

I'm surprised you don't know who the prince off darkness is as most a kiwi men love there pommy motor bikes. Anyway the reg is toasted but don't plug it in until you get the alternator checked or you will kill another regulator. :)

We have always referred to the Kiwis as South Pacific poms.

perhaps my luck did run out, but thanks to good o'l jap imports i found another regulator the next day and BAM she's a runner again :)

Well, you're not likely to do it again now, are you?
I'd say it was just reinforcing what you learned: that changing the Batts out while the engine is running is not a good idea. For one, it creates an unbalanced load on the system and, well, fries regulators, apparently.
So, sure, you're welcome, no worries.

It's generally not a good idea to change batteries while any equipment is running, unless it's an emergency situation.
Especially for all electronics systems including vehicles.

Seriously, thanks for sharing the experience, bad and good. None of us live long enough to make every mistake possible so we all benefit from the experience of others.

for future reference, it's useful for people searching the messages for information on a problem when a discussion title is more descriptive like:
"BJ74 instrument lights flash"
