For example, maybe take the computer, pump, rail and injectors from one of the common rail D4D engines, and <somehow> make that work on an older engine.
as I write this, it feels like a fools errand... why not just use the whole modern D4D engine that would donate the common rail bits?
I am in isolation, and thinking too much.

Hmmmm.... Take a nice old simple survivalist engine (that can run on pretty much any fuel) and at great expense (have you checked out common rail piezo injector prices lately?) modify it to produce a bit more power and be completely dependent on electricity (and with a computer vulnerable to EMP bursts) and ultra clean refined fuels (no tar sands residual fines, please!).
Sounds like a solid plan to me! Have at it! 😜

tar sands residual fines.... #fake news

This. And after you do I'll take that 13bt to replace my sad 3bii, haha.

Or somehow adapt a Bosch b7100 p-pump from a cummins 4bt onto the 13b-t

The R2.8 didn't really meet expectations.
