According to my guage - I'm dead level right now. I'll get more accurate measurements of the distance between the Atlas and the bottom of the frame rails.

Two issues I had in lowering the engine too much were the angle of the motor mount. I wanted it to be as close to a 90 degree angle to the corner of the frame as possible. Also - I am thinking about going back to a mechanical (Caddy) fan - so I also lined up the front of the water pump to the center of the radiator...

You are alot more motivated than I am. It's been so hot, I don't want to do anything in my shop.

I have no complaints with my alum skid...it's pretty dinged up too, got a workout on Saturday.

It definitely collects the grooves tho, and does require some sanding down to remove the burrs after a hard trip...the ability to hold it up with one hand for install tho is nice :D

Rocktaxi and I both run aluminum skids, as do most of the guys at Sunray.

6061 is some hard s***. Mine has taken a huge beating and has gouges, but overall it does not dig in.

I am planning on downsizing to a 1/4" like Rocktaxi has and lining it with cutting board material this time though.
 
My skid has been hammered hard, and has held up better than the 1/4" steel plate I used to use.

It does not seem to be noticably any stickier that the steel plate either.

Nolen's cutting board material approach is a good idea though. If I can make it slippery, that would be even better!

Ok - one step forward...

I looked at the comments and started really looking and you guys were right. The engine was too high (thanks).

So, cut everything out, reclocked the atlas a few more times and here's what I've got now.

The engine is down about 4+ inches. The measurements are: bottom of frame to ground 25", bottom of the oil pan to the ground 25", Transmission pan to the bottom of the frame 1", Atlas to the bottom of the frame 1 1/4", Top of the bell housing - right where it meets the engine block 42".

Does this look better? Tomorrow I start building motor mounts again - unfortunately the 4 frame brackets I made are now scrap...
 
Looking really good. That's lower than I could get my motor and still clear the harmonic balancer and the steering ram on full compression.

sounds excellent to me....glad my measureing work made some sense last night....lol

My front centerline is about 1" ahead of the harmonic...I've yet to whack it, but I also run a 1" OD tube under the harmonic for the front limit chain to attach to....even with the ram behind /above the axle, no contact concerns there either (tho, I should grab a measurement someday....)

next on the experiment list it to make that a cinchable limit point...might finally FINALLY have an idea on how to do that....

I suggest tacking up the next set of brackets first....NEVER final weld for at least a couple days, in case you run across a new issue to fix :D


(I have 3 experimental tranny crossmembers in the scrap heap....ya get used to it...)

I was thinking - these measurements are all with the drive train supported by the enngine hoist and the floor jack. Once the weight is on the frame my springs should compress and I should be down a couple of more inches.

I need to concider this. The new front axle (which is not in place) has the tie rod behind the axle vs in front. Hmmm - more variables...

By "front centerline" are you referring to the center of the front axle?

Same thing I said to myself as I was cutting and grinding the tube off of the motor side plate. :doh: :eek: Live and learn...

I run Luke's histeer with the behind-axle tie rod...the rod clears the spring pack by MAYBE 1/2"...and my 8" stroke assist ram mounts on the pumpkin. It will largely depend on your wheelbase and where you positioned the front axle...
