Hard shifting trans

Hey guys, I have 2003 LC w/201k on it that is shifting hard. Mostly when down shifting.
It goes into gear smooth and shifts smooth enough when accelerating. It shifts hard in every gear as it is down shifting when coming to a stop. Is this as bad as I feel that it is, or can it be something not so terrible? Any help is appreciated. It’s my wife’s car not entirely sure how long this has been going on.

Check the fluid level.

I checked the fluid level both cold and after a 20 minute warm up. It was at correct levels. I drove it to the bus stop this morning, it felt funky going from reverse to forward.

I did a fluid and filter change about a year ago. Not because of any tranny problems, just doing maintenance based on mileage.

I don't have a 2003 but my 2001 takes like 5 miles street driving to get to the operating temperature the FSM says to check the fluid level at. Make sure you are on a level surface and the 4 speed you need to shift through all gears before checking the fluid level.

What fluid did you use and mileage you ran now since you had your last drain and fill on ATF?

When you say it “shifts hard on downshifting” -does this mean it stays long on that gear? What’s the highest rpm reading on your tachometer when you were downshifting?
