Feast your eye on this… my newly acquired 1996 HDJ80, with 5 speed manual transmission

This is my third, and hopefully final, Landcruiser

They say third time is the charm and this is essentially everything I wanted when I previously bought what I could afford at the time

Originally that was a 1992 FJ80 with the 3FE I’d had done a few mods, mostly suspension, and rebuilt both axles/birfs myself in a single car garage when I was living in CA. Unfortunately it left my wife stranded one day and it was all downhill from there

Before selling the ‘92 I had been doing better financially and decided to splurge on a 1991 HDJ81. I’ve owned project cars since I was a wee lad and was a diesel mechanic in the navy which is only one more  than a Jiffy lube tech with the added pressure of senior enlisted and officers screaming at you…. I guess not much different than some overweight jiffy lube manager but I digress

Here is the 81 as I bought it SOLD - HDJ81 Boise, Idaho tons of recent work, upgrades too! 🔥 - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/hdj81-boise-idaho-tons-of-recent-work-upgrades-too.1267617/
Unfortunately the unknown/unknowable and Murphy’s law resulted it what I believe to be cracks in the cylinder walls and the 1HDT continues to push coolant into the overflow. I’ll be selling this and someone can take a chance on sleeving it

So a little over 7 years of owning land cruisers and about 7 total camping trips… I camped more out of my wife’s old Hyundai accent than a Land Cruiser over this time… no bueno

This brings us to present day, about 3 weeks ago, 2 weeks before we welcomed our first child into the world, my wife does the unthinkable “why don’t you buy another one, just make sure it runs this time”. You bet your sweet ass I took advantage of her compromised state at the end of the third trimester

Off to the races I went and purchased this bad mama jamma SOLD - Nashville, TN- 1996 HDJ80 LHD Triple-Locked(SOLD) - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/nashville-tn-1996-hdj80-lhd-triple-locked-sold.1359990/

First impressions? Fantastic truck that seems obviously renovated at some point with the better part of 400k miles on it, it is in just too god of shape for it to be otherwise

Over the last 7 years or so I’ve put a lot of time, parts and money into my land cruisers and it’s time to cannibalize everything I can off of the 81 to put onto the 80

The list off the top of my head are
-beefier rear trailing arms
-2” heavy dobinson lift
-2” delta radius arms
-PDI air box
-PDI front mount intercooler
-Delta center console
-LRA 25 gallon aux tank
-Sliders
-Drawer system
-Sway bar drop brackets
-new-ish Radiator
-Catch can
-Blue sea fuse panel

And much more

Stay tuned

Congratulations on the new to you rig.

The wife and I agreed to 2 hour/day for each other to do whatever we want while the other watches the baby so I’ve decided to start tearing down the 81.

The intention is to pull everything off, clean it and paint it where necessary so I started with the batteries (12v converted system) and intake system

One note: Anything I take off the 80 is NOT for sale, I’ll be keeping everything in case the day comes I want to return it to stock condition

PDI air box allows the 200 series filter and a ton more breathing capacity… if everything looks dirty it’s because I took the ol girl out for one more adventure before decommissioning

I will be parting out everything I don’t use from the 81… of which there are a lot of goodies and good condition stock parts

Taking off the cold air hoses, looks like I got a good amount of oil in there…. A little bit of neglect I suppose as the catch can was full

I think it’s somewhat ironic that I have been a classic car guy my entire life and I could have bought a

911
Charger
GTX
Chevelle
Corvette

And I chose another LandCruiser…

I blame my dad for taking me camping

With my time today I changed the heater control valve, the previous owner was recommended to do this asap so he bought the part and sent it with the truck.

The hoses are in sub par condition so will need to change those out too but will need to search for those part numbers unless someone has them on hand. The search function only works well if you got the time and if I didn’t mention it enough already I have a new born and as soon as I try searching a binkie falls out of place and all hell breaks loose haha

I also change out the cotter pin style hose clamp as it got destroyed in the removal process

Since I introduced an air pocket I decided to do a mild burp on the coolant system. Looked inside the radiator and see some build up…. Luckily I have a brand new one in the 81. That part number is 16400-17020. I think they are a direct swap but have different radiator cap pressures. If anyone could confirm that would also be great

Update: was able to find the correct p/n for the radiator which is 16400-17040, but the -17020 is a substitute

Hard to tell from the engine photo, but it does look like you have a rear heater in the cabin. Seems like the hoses have been altered to make it work or bypassed. A closeup would help.

Heater control valve to heater core:
If you have rear heater then: 87208-60320.
If no rear heater: 87245-60420

Block to heater control valve:
87245-60320

Heater core to block (includes the tee for rear heater core)
87209-60360

I was able to get the HPD front mount intercooler off the 81 today. I have the automatic trans cooler from PDI not sure if there’s any adaptability or point to pair this with the manual trans so it will go up for sale soon

Didn’t do much today checked the fluids as I neglected to do this properly last week when the truck arrived. Engine oil was over filled by 1.5 qts so I drained some out, ran it to operating and checked again all good now

I also took a look at the front birfs and they are leaking, not news to me the guys at OTM let me know before I bought the truck. There’s a part time kit on it already so just the excuse I need to go with longfields
