Next Tuesday the 29th at 7:00pm Dan2722 & Myself are going to get together and go over our Yesus radios operation and basic HAM receiving and transmitting.
I just got my radio installed so Dan is going to show me a few things he has learned since getting his installed. So if anyone else who is new to HAM or someone who has vast knowledge that they would like to share with us please join in.
We both live pretty close to eachother and have not decided on a location but it will either be at one of our houses or somewhere in between if we have more than a few rigs. Maybe Balboa park since that is between where we each live.

Wish I were closer - sounds like fun. What radio's are you running? I got some great tips from my former Scoutmaster when I was a kid on my Yaesu FT-8800. He's been a ham since the 60's and his advice on the radio set up and use of the memory and hot buttons has been very useful.

According to the SoCal HAM Database Dan has a: YAESU 7900R and I have a: Yaesu FT-7100m
And after sitting in the truck for a half hour with the manual I got no where so I hit up Dan since we got our Licenses together and live close to eachother to set this up.

So what are these tips, could you transcribe them for us, I will hook you up with a  next time I see ya.

Yup. Sure do.

OK, then I say we make Dan come to our hood. Let's just do it at my house since I have a nice assortment of  left over from Saturday's UFC fight. My buddies with the exception of two (Bud Light) drink really good beers.

Sam, I don't think you have been to my pad yet so I will PM you my address, it's just 2 blocks from 30th & Grape.

Sounds like a plan, I will be at your place at 7:00.

Just don't drink all the  watching the NCAA final game Monday night.:D

See you guys tomorrow evening!

Oh and Sam, I drove past you pad this weekend and it is Ulysses that lives right behind you next to that vacant lot. So Yes three built 80's in the hood plus three doors down from me is Chris (in2cruisers) who has a cool 60 series turbo diesel & two 40 series.

I don't know the radio's you are running, but on the 8800 there are 6 quick memory buttons and the radio has 10 memory banks.

I've set up the open repeaters from TASMA's list, one memory bank for each county and the counties I visit most frequently are then assigned to the 6 memory buttons on the face of the radio. I do assign some frequencies to all the memory banks like national simplex 146.52 and the adopted Cruiser band 146.46 (if memory is any good). Getting to the other 4 memory banks is a little pain in the arse on the 8800 but doable. I've found this an extremely easy set up.

You are right - Yaesu's manuals do SUCK.

He goes even further using the AARP software that lets you input a route for a trip and it will search it's database for the repeaters along the route. The software will then allow you to download those to a memory bank. Cool, but I don't own that software.
