I know this has been discussed and I read a few posts but my question is a little different and I want actual details.

I might get a chance for a 1HD-T swap in for 13B-T in a BJ74.

The 1HD-T is from a HDJ81 that came with A440F automatic transmission.

Now I want to know details of the modifications that will take place for mating this 1HD-T to the BJ74 transmission i.e. H55F.

I also have one manual transmission lying around which came from a KZJ77 1KZ-T. Is it worth considering?

Keep in mind that I want to keep the manual winch and I like the H55F transmission.

Not sure about the KZJ77, pretty sure it will not work tho.

G&S Cruisers did a 1hdt to h55 for one of our customers many moons ago, it was a absoloute rocket ship in a j60.

Try searching, more info might come up.

Get an HZJ73 or an HZJ77 and save yourself a lot of time and trouble... and money.

The B series trannies won't work - need input shaft, bellhousing, etc...
The P series tranny won't work - ditto.

You will need to find a bellhousing, flywheel, clutch, radiator, trans input shaft, and a whole lot of other goodies to make this work. It's doable, but not really practical.

If you were starting with an HZJ7x then it's almost a bolt in swap.

Even among the BJ74s there's a number of differences that makes swaps interesting when parts are not very common. ie: from auto to 5 speed.

I have that set up.

1) Getting the 300mm HD-T flywheel is a trick, kinda $$$$.
2) Wiring the alternator was a little tough
3) the 13B-T a/c compressor DOES NOT FIT a HZ/HDT
the rest of the conversion is pretty simple

I did a nice conversion, stayed 24V, and bought HDJ78/9 fuel lines, air cleaner top, replaced the right side apron w/ HZJ style, and then bought mostly new radiator, fuel filter, PS lines, A/C lines, etc to trim it out. I also have really good parts sources (Stedman, AAIE, Mot, Sydney City, Icky, Bingham, B. Downey, G. Riemer etc).

as John said, starting with a HZJ73 you could do it in a weekend. I took about 2 months for a 13B-T to HD-T conversion and a lot of $. the only bad thing is the front diff which you could swap the axle anytime for a 9.5" diff style.

far better engine than a 13B-T.

best of luck, keep us posted.

***** one note, I have cable locker and under full compression the locking mech hits the oil pan corner on the HD-T.

I can work around parts and it won't cost that much since I will get used parts from dead transmissions/engines. Just guide me as to what to salavage. My concern is the transmission. Everything else can be worked around.

Radd Cruisers:

What transmission do HZJ73 /HZJ77 have?

So in order to get the H55F with 1HD-T I need:

A HZJ77 shaft and bell housing
Clutch and flywheel .. from which engine/transmission?

This is a first time conversion and hunting for parts is my job. All I need is reference/part number. Locating them is easy given there are a lot of 1HZ and 1HD engines/parts here.

So can I get the 13B-T off you when you are done?

The HZJ7x have the H55F that you want, with the correct shaft and bellhousing.

Conversions are not really that tough, it's finding the parts and making it economical that is the hard part.

Way easier starting with something that is pretty much what you want to begin with. The 1HZ and the 1HDT are virtually identical in layout. Just swap in the 24V parts from the 1HZ to the 1HDT, get some 24V glow plugs for the 1HDT (the 1HZ ones probably fit ok) and Bob's your uncle.

Excactly trade up to HZJ73 swap the 1HZ plus cash for the 1HD-T . Just an easier option.!?
We Know that you have the BJ-74 and probably want to work with what you have.

Just turbo and intercool the hz and you will get more hp and torque than a 1hd-t

What if you intercool and up boost and fuel wont a hdt have more ponys or not cos they start with less compression?

Yup, another good point.!For some
I know someone who turboed the 1HZ and in the long run went 1HD-T, boom Any ways its Dans thread he has probably got a plan already

ummm, unless the BJ engine is dead, sell it.
take the money and use it as a down on the HZJ truck.
in the long run you will be happier:
a) no headaches
b) cheaper
c) turn key
d) no fabbing to be done
e) all factory (so when you go for parts you can say blah blah, instead of the engine came from a ... i think and the tranny came from ... i think. and the rad came from ... i think.

just saying...KISS principle

i'd love to get the denco intercooler and turbo kit in for a future hzj77. jesus its going to be sweet and a kick in the wallet.
oh the things i want to put on that truck.

They are coming... the turbos at least. Sold the last intercooler we had in stock today (more on order).

The ship with our freight comes in this week, and hopefully it won't be too much longer before the container gets out of the pile and our parts over to us.

1HZ turbos - :bounce2::clap::bounce2::clap: - should be lots of fun !!
