H55F Transmission Replacement

Save your box the transmission comes in - it's a real handy way to store the old one.

Here are my notes:
To split the transfer from the transmission, the transfer case has to split.
Remove the nut that holds the spring/ball bearing on the shift lever on
top of the case.
You do not need to remove anything else for it to come off.
The rear output shaft can stay on, and it will pull the gear assembly off with it.
The shift lever goes in the slot on the fork. You will have to fiddle with it
to get it on or off.
Make sure to mark the input and output shaft flanges.
The ARE different, and interchangeable, so you can put them on swapped, but the rear on the front will crush the flange.

The transmission-transfer case seal is BE2015F (NOK) 224872 (Timken/National)
The front output shaft seal is BE1192G (NOK) 224815 (Timken/National)
The rear output shaft seal is AE2774F (NOK) 224810 (Timken/National)

Check the plugs for stripped threads before re-assembling.
The PTO cover has to remain off to tighten the screws for the case.
14MM are 27Ft-Lb, 17MM are 47Ft-lb, and the output flange nuts are 94Ft-lb.

I sure wish I'd had all that info before starting mine.

For a data point -
My old '86 got a new transmission a long time ago.

I ran my H55F for 240,000 miles WITHOUT that plastic oiler cup installed and the transmission was fine after all those miles and decades. 5th gear sounded and shifted the same as the day I bought it.
Back when I installed the 5 speed transmission (in 1989) nobody had really done it on a 60 in the USA and there wasn't any guidance about that damn oiler cup. The parts tech at Toyota didn't mention it - so I never ordered it or installed it - and never knew it even existed... Until a couple years ago.

I ran synthetic 75W-90 gear oil in it since day one and no problems developed - thank goodness.

Those of you with a H55F do you start off in first gear, or second. Just curious if first is too low for road use

I start off in 1st all the time. Not too low. Perfect.

Depends. Pointed up hill, start in 1st. Pointed downhill may use gravity and start in 2nd. Level ground either 1st or 2nd, if 2nd give it more gas than with 1st to get rolling.

Wirh 31" tires and stock gears: Always start in first from a dead stop. If rolling through a stop sign- always "start" in second (any time the wheels are still rolling).

Or just call Cruiser Outfitters, we have everyone of those parts on the shelf and put together similar H55F install kits on a daily basis :D

If you're a DIY kinda guy, this should help:

Georg's video definitely helped me out a lot on my '86 FJ60 build! Will be looking at it again in a few weeks when I build the '84 HJ47 H41/'85 BJ45 split transfer case combo for my '71 FJ40.

Absolutely rebuild and inspect internal components of your tcase. In addition to the t-case rebuild kits. We stock all of the internal shafts, gears, collars and forks should you get in there and find something out of whack. Look for excessive internal spline wear on the input gear, seal surface damage on flanges, etc.

An alternative (albeit more $$) is just doing a complete new transfer case. If you but the trans/tcase/parts from us (very competitive price) we assemble the trans & tcase combo for free. So you get shipped a complete and ready to install setup.
