So, I want to rebuild my H55f (well, really just swap the input shaft), and after getting quoted a small fortune to have the dealer do it, I'd just as soon do it myself if I can. I'm not too worried at all about doing it, but I don't have any of the SSTs the FSM calls for, so I figure I'd better buy them...

So the question is, are the SSTs for the job that fancy for the H55f, or can I get general pullers and stuff for them?

Going through the SST, I have this list:
  • 09313-30021 Removes the 5th gear locking ball?
  • 09950-20016 Removes the front and rear bearings
  • 09213-27010 5th Gear puller
  • 09326-20011 Lock Nut (this doesn't look too special to me)
  • 09309-36033
  • 09309-60010

The last two look more like pipes that fit over the various shafts to help install and pull other parts, but I'm not sure.

So... what say you guys? Can I get these at a local tool store, or am I better off just trying to get them from Toyota?

This has been raised in the 60 section a couple of times (you might search there) but as I remember, the general consensus was no SSTs are really needed, but you will need some specialized (i.e. expensive) pullers: particularly a long-arm one for removing the front input shaft bearing.

I've never done it myself, so this is just what I've read.

Also, you've got a PM

Thanks for the PM.

I looked through the FAQs, and haven't yet found those in the 60 section. I'll go search a bit more...

Dan - did you ever tackle your H55 input shaft swap? I attempted to start up on mine tonight. I got to the point where you remove the counter gear rear lock nut with SST 09326-20011 and I'm stumped. It's a 36mm stakenut. I have a 36mm socket but I can't get that damn nut off after chiseling away the staking points.

Just looking for pointers if you've made it past this point in the rebuild.

They prolly used Red Loctite -- You'll most likely have to smoke it with a flame.

:wrench:

I ended up using a grinder too. That damn thing was on there tight.

Now it's time to fab a puller for the rear main shaft bearing. All of the others came out easily.
