Hello guys, I am in the process of rebuilding my H55F transmission and transfer case. The guy who is doing the rebuild told me today that during assembly he noticed the big outermost gear /33335/ on the main shaft has a side to side play about 5 mm. He told me that there shouldn't be any such play and wanted to fit a shim about that thick to eliminate the play. He is the guy who disassembled the tranny and says he reassembled everything right. Is there should be a play like that? I found a partial EPC line drawing that is not showing the needed part. Anyone has a full drawing to put here. Thanks.

I hope this helps

Hi Davaa,

Davaa,
I've lookeing into the repair manual for the H55F, because I never had this tranny apart. The manual says nothing about compensating axial play. All the needle bearings in the tranny are identical - except for the inputshaft bearing - so he (your mechanic) cannot be using the wrong kind of bearing.
Therefore I assume you should do without a shim.
I've had apart the transfer several times and from that I know that the needlebearings in there have quite some axial play as well (several mm's, maybe even more than 5 mm) although I never measured it.
I would not worry about it. To my opinion it is allowed to have this play.

There should NOT be that much play in any of the gears. The part noted as 33306 (syncro assembly) DOES have a fair bit of play but the gear noted as 33335 does NOT have much play. Ideally is should have an almost imperceptible amount of play. I've just gone through my H42 to H41 swap in the FJ55.

I'm going to move this to the '60 series forum since you'll get more response there.

5mm is way too much... is the 33348 washer in place? and iirc there a 2 versions of bearing 33321....one style bearing is a 2 piece with separate inner race.... the race has to be installed with the thick flanged side inward toward the 33348 washer...some actual pics of the problem area would help.....

Davaa,
disregard my previous message. I misread your posting, thinking you were referring to the needle-bearing, but you are talking about the gears.
As Cruiserguy and grant5127 are saying, play should be minimal. Standard thrustclearance should be 0.175-0.320 mm for 1st and 2nd gears (wear limit max 0.35 mm) For 3th gear it is 0.125-0.270 mm (limit here is 0.30 mm)
Standard Radial clearance is 0.020 - 0.073 mm for 1st and second (wearlimit 0.08) and 0.065-0.115mm for third (limit here is 0.12mm)

Guys, Thanks for inputs. The shim wasn't necessary, it won't let shift into 1st and 2nd gears when car is moving. The guy removed the shim and it is ok now BUT the problem that I was looking to cure with tranny overhaul still remains. I guess it is not bearings. It is the grinding like sound at around 30Km/h in 3rd gear and at about 40 in 4th gear. Past 40-45 the sound goes away. Any ideas?

CruiserMongolia, I sent a PM.

Davaa
