I just picked up a slightly used H55 from another Mud member. It was shifting fine through the pattern (had to feel that 5th gear) and it was smooth as can be.
Then I placed the trans in a jig tonight so I can do the t case work in a comfortable and easy to work position. The trans is bolted to a milk crate input shaft down. Just before I pulled the shifter out I went to check that it was in neutral. but the trans seemed to be locked in gear and the shifter wont move now! WTF! I tried to gently move it around but it is stuck in gear. Any tips or tricks to solve this problem? Do you think I should resolve this before bolting up the t-case? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Did you start having the problems after you pulled the shifter off or top cover off?

You may be able to put it back into neutral with the shifter out. Mine arrived locked in gear and I had to pull the top cover off to realign things. No big deal, at least you caught it before putting it in the truck!

I had problems from the time I mounted it in the jig. Prior to that it was shifting fine. I have not removed the top cover and I am hesitant to do so because I don't have a manual that describes the 5sp and how it should be set up. Like I said it was shifting fine before being put in the jig.

Mine did the same thing. It is the reverse gear falling forward when you tip it on end. I am doing my 5 speed now, and just recently tipped it on end like you have done to rebuild the tcase and this happened to me. I'm pretty sure it is normal, however this is the first time that I've done it.

Yeah mine did the same thing it was the reversing mechanism moving inside the tranny.

So how do I "unlock" it ?

I took the top off of my transmission after i installed it. At the rear passenger side of the transmission is the reversing mechanism. If you luck out it might move back into the correct location after you install it. The reversing mechanism pivots on the case of the transmission. If you look inside you should be able to understand what I'm talking about.

x2 .. you got to take the top of to see what needs to be done. You shouldn't have any problems moving it back into place.

Can't you just tip it on its back? Seems like it should move right back into place.

I wish it was that easy! That was one of the first things I tried.

I used the handle of a screwdriver to push it back where it goes, you have to take the cover off. What I don't get is, if you going down a steep decline, wouldn't the gear fall forward? It seems that the gear is free to do what it wants.

I pulled the top of of mine and "fixed it" last week.

weird how they get stuck in reverse...

just pull the top off, it's easy...

What's not so easy is getting it back on right. I haven't done an H55, but I have done a couple tranny's in my Early Broncos. Before you install the thing back in the rig make sure it shifts through all of the gears and the shafts spin.

The 36mm transmission output shaft stake nut and the big fat washer behind it should keep the gear from walking, one reassembled and mated to the transfercase.

Hey Peter how did you make out with the H55 ??
Everything alright ??:confused::confused:

Let me know !!

I got the t-case mated up to the H55. I pulled the top cover and it was the reverse thing like a few guys said. I have the trans and t-case under the truck and I will put it in in the morning. I tried to do it this afternoon but it was hot and the trans was not cooperating with me (I could not line it up). I will have it done tomorrow. I can't wait to drive it with the H55.

Hey Manuchao did you pick up your adapter today? Lets get wrenching on that thing!
