Hey guys,

I have a H55f in my 84 fj40 - I am just starting to notice something that scares me - a lot

Its most noticeable at over 80km/h so I assume its something on the output side (doesn't increase with revs) and I can hear it a lot more when I push the clutch in (read that as I can hardly notice it when its in gear) - its kind of a loud growl that I can feel through the shifter almost as if I was lightly pushing it into reverse while going forward.

Also the box doesn't like going into 2nd or 5th have to really force it (double clutching doesn't help) - dont know if this is related.

I have recently changed the oil and there was a small amount of metal on the magnet.

Any help is much appreciated and thanks in advance

Cameron

That thread looks good for my hard shifting problem but wouldn't account for the growling noise above 80kays with the clutch in?

correct me if im wrong...

You have not mentioned how many miles are on the unit, or whether it is original to the vehicle?

If it is NOT original to the vehicle, do you know it's history?

It is original and there is about 250k (km) on the clock - Im the second owner - apparently it was always a bit hard to get into 2nd and 5th

That is very relevant information.

It is more than time for a rebuild at 250km. Growling bearings that are ignored lead to whining gears, which exponentially multiplies the cost of repairs. The fact that the bearings on the back of the 5 speed main housing take a load on both sides does not help their longevity.

The gears whine a bit already....

how hard is it to change that bearing?

doable with gearbox in the car?

weekend job?

Ok.... so from what i have read i need to pull the gearbox - take the split case off - pull the extension housing and thats where the bearing is....

is this correct?
do i need special tools? pullers?

Basically yes to all. Have a shop do it. You can take in the tranny to save some $$ but if you have not done this before, let the pros tackle it.

I HAVE the SST set from Toyota, and it's right at the limits of the tool's capacity to pull that bearing out. It is a TOTAL S.O.B. I have made an additional SST to help do this job, and it's still THE HARDEST part of the entire rebuild.

Seriously, if you can pull this bearing out, it won't take more than an hour to service the WHOLE rest of the transmission from that point.

Hmm so fairly involved job...

Is there any chance it could be something else?
i have been reading some other posts on weird noises and thought maybe uni joints or the ?pinion? (is that what it is?) bearing on the rear diff? - i noticed a small leak developing since i did the 2in lift kit..... (Just realised this could be important info - sorry)
