While i was installing my turbo i notice that my slave clutch cylinder was leaking, that was last week. I started running the truck last Thrusday with the turbo, did a few tripp, and now since Sunday i'm having issue engaging the first and fifth gear. Since yesterday sometimes i even cannot get the first in. So yesterday i went to the dealer to get a slave and got it installed today at noon. Still first gear and fifth gear will not go in most, i say most because it goes in sometimes, harder then before.

Now i may not have bleed the slave correctly since i was alone, but could having issue engaging first and fifth be related to a leaking slave? Or can this be related to the extra power of the truck.?

Not sure at all whats up.

From memory i think my dad once had this tranny changed because it drank lots of whater, so maybe my tranny doesn't have at all the mileage of the truck.

First and 5th have different synchros, so the chances of having two bad ones simultaneously is exponentially lower than having one bad synchro. This is especially true if both just started acting up.

If your clutch is not releasing fully it will be harder to shift in any gear. How about reverse when you are not moving? If it grinds going into gear after depressing the clutch for 10 sec, the clutch is not releasing.

A leaking slave should be replaced and then bled. They are usually self bleeding by gravity if you have enough flow.

Bon chance.

Yep reverse is also very very hard, but doesn't grind, make me wonder if it is not the shifter links, no grind, it just seems not to align when i try to shift in the gear. So i keep on having to kick the shifter left and right so i can eventually shift it in first, fifht or reverse.

I thought the slave didn't have ajustment but it does, do i simply pull the pin out until it seat or touch the fork, thus removing any gap in between slave pin and fork? Or do i push the fork further with the slave pin?

it is probably not the syncro, maybe bad clutch ajustment, what about a high clutch? do i solve this with the pedal rod to the master cylinder?

If it doesn't grind going into R, it is not a clutch issue. If it is also hard shifting into R, it is not a synchro issue as there is none.

(You adjust length of the slave rod if it is adjustable until you have the specified amount of free play at the top of the pedal; 10-15mm? The pedal height is also adjustable inside the cab).

Sounds more like a top cover issue. You might try searching or posting in the FJ60 forum as they see more H55 tranny problems.

I would have to say from experience that you either still have air trapped in the system or a pilot bushing that is hanging on the input shaft......I have seen non syncro reverse not go in and not grind...how far off the floor does the clutch start to engage? Here's a good trick to try.....try putting it in reverse, if it won,t go pump the clutch pedal like you would brakes and see if it goes right in....if it does you still have air trapped in the system....Rod

I'd pull the stick and take a look at the bushing on the end, and also the ball seat in the top cover..........both plastic consumables

Pumping the clutch won't make thing go in, i need to be hard on the shifter to make things happen.

I've reajusted the clutch, thing are a bit better but still fifth and reverse is problematic.

Grant,

What is required to do that,? can i do this with the rubber seal around the shifter removed? Can i remove tranny top cover without dropping it to the floor?

Just remove the rubber boot and push down and twist on the stick retainer... its a the base of the stick....

No need to remove the top cover yet; just remove the stick. Put tranny in N to avoid confusion about what gear it was in when you removed the stick. Remove boot. Push down on sheet metal retainer ring (I use two screwdrivers). Twist ring 1/8 turn L or right. Check for broken or worn ball and ball seat and loose pins.

What about this? plastic shaving? Flushing the tranny is in order?

Looks like the ball seat (plastic) disintegrated on you. A flush would help, but you need a new plastic piece(seat) for sure.... Those chunks floating around in the gear oil will probably just be a nuisance, but the shifter will not be in correct position to select all the gears properly, thus your problem with 1st and 5th???

YMMV, Cheers!

ordered a new seat and bushing, 25$ and 5$...

Typical plastic carnage..:frown:.. I'd pull the drain plug and flush it out with some solvent through the shifter hole......

That was it, tranny feels like a new one! Thanks!
