Hi all,
I need some advice. I have just installed a new engine in my 83 FJ-60
a centerforce clutch, new pilot bearing, and I'm trying to install the rebuilt
5 speed H55 tranny/xfer , but I just can't make it go the last 1/4 inch. I used the
clutch alignment tool, and I've checked it several times and the alignment tool goes all the way in
and out easily. I have four , 3 inch bolts with the heads cut off, in place where the tranny
bolts go for guides, and it all looks to line up just fine, but I just get it the last 1/4 inch.
I checked that the pilot bearing slid on and off the end of the input shaft before I installed it,
and I have inspected it several times since trying to get the tranny in and it does not appear
to be damaged, and still turns easily. I greased everything, I'm at a loss. Help!
Thanks,
Tool Man

Hydraulic lock in the pilot bearing? If there's too much grease in there it will act like a seal and not let air out from the bearing and little "cup" in the flywheel.

also ensure the gap between the tranny and bell housing is even all the way around; if tranny is tilted more than a smidgen, input shaft wont's enter pilot bearing...

Thanks, I hadn't considered that it could hydraulicly lock. Has this happend to you? Is it common?

that's not common...

i usually get it within an inch, then use the bolts to pull the tranny all the way in.

if it's truly only a 1/4"... then use the bolts. you're done.

Thanks, I'll check that with the 4 speed I took out. We should get together, I'm from Wellington.

if it were from a 3B... it woudn't fit through the splines of the 2F clutch... he never would have gotten it in as far as he has.

There is some difference that needs to be dealt with on pre '85 FJ60s when doing an H55 install. I can't remember what the heck it is or if it has to do with fit.

The engine/tranny interface is the same for pre '85s It's just that post '85 trucks had a spacer between the tranny and transfer so it is a direct swap. The Pre '85 trucks have the transfer (and hence the cross member) in a different spot.

Speaking from experience, you need to check to see if your tranny front bearing retainer is interfering with the bell housing in the two O'clock position. I had the same problem when I was trying to stab my H55f in my 83 FJ60, and after I noticed this problem, all I had to was relieve the bellousing opening about 1/8" in a small area, and it went right in.

Had a similar problem when I did my swap. New everything when I did mine. The tranny just wouldn't quite slide in. And I was doing it on a lift with a real tranny jack! Last time I did a clutch it was on the side of a road in the mud...

Anyhow, make sure the tranny is in nuetral and try rotating the input shaft. Took me over an hour, but it finally slipped in. Patience!

Thank you very much landcruiserdude and dmwberg! You were exactly correct, I got the grinder out and provided a little relief in the bell housing for the little extra beefy bosses on the transmission input shaft housing at about 2 and 10'o'clock and it slipped right in. Sure wish man-a-fre would have told me about that when I bought it.
Thanks again,
Tolol Man

Crossmember is in the SAME place on a four speed and a five speed because it supports the tranny NOT the transfer or the tranny extension. I know because I've done the conversion on my BJ60 (it uses the same basic tranny housing and supports as the FJ60).
The differences between the pre and post '85 is the drive shaft lengths. Post '85 drive shafts fit an H55 conversion without modification, pre-85 need lengthening/shortening for the front/rear.
