Transplanting a 3B from a BJ70 into a '76 FJ40. Called Toyota and found out that H55 crossmembers are no longer supported in their system.

Would prefer to get all three pieces from a short wheel-base, but will settle for a center section or any 2-piece set.

Thanks.

Tim

just asking, as I don't know the diesel stuff.
did the later 70 series use a rotated bellhousing, similar to the 85+ 60 series
so it used the 1 piece crossmember versus the 3 piece and the 1 is not a bolt in for the other
if so the OP needs to know what version he has so he gets the correct one for his needs.

Your crossmember appears to be 1979 - 1983 pre 5 speed type.

Sorry don't mean to hijack just reading this got me curious. Is my 82 able to accept the H55 without obtaining different cross bracket?

Now back to your regular channel! Thanks
I installed one into my '82 (11/1981) stock rolling chassis without any issues or modifications to the tranny crossmember. Of course I had rebuild the TC with a later case and driveshafts will have to be altered. Much later down the line I'll find out about the hump and inspection cover, but the cross member and mount were perfect. Hope that helps.

Because the h55F is longer than the 4 speed it moves the front drive output back around a 100mm, in doing so it changes the angle of the drive shaft....The later 40 series crossmember that is 5 speed 'compatible' has a deeper recess allowing for more clearance (Green arrow)

If the angle of the front drive shaft is kept low the 4 speed crossmember will work just fine.

same as this Vendor - 40 series H55F conversion cross member and brackets - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/40-series-h55f-conversion-cross-member-and-brackets.1238253/

I think the contact issue with the drive shaft will be some what lift dependent. Taller lifts will be more of a problem.

Paul the actual date for the start of the rotated transmission in most the world was 11/84. Which is the date the 70 series started. Most markets the FJ62 started that date with a carbureted 3F was also 11/84. We got the FJ60 up to 7/87. Guessing they used of supply of H41/H42 cases with transfer shifter boss towards front in the US up to 4/85. See other markets still getting a four speed the dummy spacer or adapter as Toyota calls it started 11/84. Verified the 11/84 BJ60 and 11/84 BJ70 used the same clutch cover. Same with the FJ and HJ.

Paul you have brought up a good point. Good chance using a 40 series cross member will end up having miss matched angles with a 70 series motor/H55F.
