I want to use the h41 with a 3spd case but it's $500/ plus the cost of the adapter to the tcase
I can get a H42 and tcase from a fj60 for $250
do the splitcases have a lower gears?
I've heard that they are stronger than 40 cases

Early FJ60 transmissions are the same length as the older (pre-1980 FJ40's). The transmission output shaft has 19 instead of 16 splines like the older H42's. The 19 spline is for the split transfer case and the 16 spline is for the older one piece case. It is said that the split case is stronger but there are transfer case "savers" that strengthen the weak areas of the older single piece cases (I run one on both the FJ55 and the FJ45LV, it's good insurance).
There are different gear ratios in the split cases as well. Marks also makes low range gear sets for the split case but those gear sets are EXPENSIVE!

Do you already have the 3 speed case? If so, do an SM420 or SM465 conversion. If you don't, by far the strongest of your options is the FJ60 split case. FJ60s from 81-84 use a short H42, the same length as early H42s from the FJ40s. Only the 85-87 H42s have that extension on the back of the tranny.

As mentioned the output splines are different from the early H42s to the later ones. The split cases go with the 19 spline tranny outputs only. I have heard rumors about oddball split cases with 16 spline inputs, but have never seen anyone post that they had one-Mark A would know the answer to that. Otherwise they all have 19 spline inputs. Split cases have in general the same 2.3:1 gearing of the 3 speed cases.

H41s follow the same pattern-the early ones have 16 spline outputs and work with the standard 1 piece "4 speed t-case". The later H41s can have the 19 spline output that goes with the split case.

SM4xx/3 speed case--Cheap, good, keep parking brake. Great off-road gearing.

Early H41/4speed case-not cheap, but good, keep parking brake.

Later H41/split case expensive, strong, loose e-brake.

A lot depends on what you want the truck to do.

I'm using a ford inline six dualfuel and already have a bellhousing to mate to the 4spd.
How much longer are the split tcase?

Don't forget if you have not already done so that a fj40 4 speed top plate where shift lever is located is in the forward position and on the fj60 it's in the aft position. So if you get a 4 speed tranny from an fj60 you may have to change out the top plate or cut tranny cover on the floor to fit. Sor.com has some good diagrams for reference.

thanks did not know that

Hi All:

Ah, do you realize that the transmission currently in your FJ40, the NP435 (see his SIG line) has lower gearing than the H41 or H42?

Why do you want to spend all this $$ on changing transmissions?

Regards,

Alan

The Perfect Cruiser's SIG line:

Got paid to drive my fj40 in the movie The Perfect Storm

1974 fj40 4.88 gears 36inch Q78 powertrax up front open rear ford 300i 4.9 np435 3speed case rear disc brakes

I'm running the H41/3spd case with a case saver. I wheel the rig frequetly and haven't had a problem yet with the strength. I say if you already have the 3spd case, H41, and bellhousing run it.

I want to keep it all toyota

Don't have the H41 yet

Later model split tcases were lower geared than earlier ones (1.9 and 2.3 I believe)

Mace-This has turned out not to be true in the USA. I used to think that as well. Off-shore, it was the other way around (when the H55 came out, the t-cases went to 1.99). In the USA I'm pretty sure the81-87 were ALL 2.3, and the vacuum one with the automatic 88-90 was 1.99. Kurt and I counted gear teeth awhile back and it was confirmed by JimC.

I have an early 85 split tcase (small idler and short H42) that is 1.9:1 in my 60. I actually chatted with Mudrack a bit about this. He said the late 85's were 2.3.

The tcase is out of my rig right now. I'll spin it again and count revolutions..

I am running H41/Split Tcase with marks 4wd gears and it is low!

10-4, everything I compiled is here:

I have some more info to add to the page (when spring SLOOOOOOWS down :D), but the important stuff is there.

Input gear information (thus showing the trans output shaft specs)

thanks guy's

If I go with the split case I lose my ebrake
Is there a kit to put one on the pinion
