Hello all,

I am about to purchase and 88 Japanese BJ74. What is the H4 Transfer Gear button to the right of the steering column? Is it an all wheel drive switch? If so, is it safe to engage on dry pavement? Do the hubs need to be locked?

Thanks,

Bruce in Tsawwassen

to engage while driving you MUST have the hubs locked
why would you want to engage on dry pavement?
as long as you are steering straight and have the hubs locked you can engage at ANY speed by pushing the button.
DO NOT DRIVE LOCKED IN ON DRY FIRM GROUND
if you forget it is locked and drive it for some distance you can tear out your t/case.
cheers

Keep in mind that the transfer gear on a 70 series is practically the same as a 40 or 60 series: it is part time four wheel drive. The hubs must be locked and then you can select H4. With a 40 or 60, you make this selection with the transfer lever; however, with a 62 or 70, you make this selection by depressing the "H4" button to the right of the steering column.

This is in direct contrast to the 80 and 100 series cruisers which are full time four wheel drive (no hubs to lock) and make use of a viscous coupling in the transfer gear to accomplish "differentiation" between the front and rear axles--much the same as a differential does between left and right.

Thanks. The question re dry pavement was not relating to a desire to engage on dry pavement but whether damage would occur.

Bruce

To be more specific the 88, 89 74 drive train is extremely close the FJ62 drive train.
