I purchased a new to me 1992 hdj81 with a H151F manual trans a few months ago. I am now in the process of doing a full baseline on the truck and I am wonder if someone could point me in the right direction regarding changing the oil in the transmission. I looked thru the online service manuals I could find but could not find step by step instructions.

1st, Is there really no dipstick to check transmission oil levels in the manual trans?
2nd, what is the recommended oil to use?
3rd, I found the drain plug and what appears to be the filler plug near the top of the trans. Do I just fill it to the rim like a diff or there is a exact amount of fluid that needs to be added?
Anything else I should know about?

Thanks for the help!

1. no
2. 75W-90 GL4
3. there is a drain plug at the bottom and another filler plug on the side and fill to the rim ( there are 2 plugs on the side, one that's too hi and another that it's the correct like 1/4 of the total height of the tranny )

Fill plug here. As tapage said, fill to the rim

Great! Thanks for the info and taking the time to get pictures.

You'll be putting just over 2 litres into it.

If you want more info on your h151 download the FSM from the offroad80s site. It's on the chassis manual.

Also try to get your 75w90 in bulk, that stuff gets super expensive and I've only ever seen it in synthetic around town. Which is what you want anyways.

Should I use that same 75w90 oil in my diff's?

Yessir! I use synthetic 75w90 in my diffs, tcase and trans.

You'll need one of those pump things to get the fluid into the trans and front diff. Extremely difficult to get the fluid in there otherwise.

Is it a good idea to use different oil for Transmission and Tcase? Currently I have got Amsoil in my Tcase and I'm planning to use ACdelco syncromesh for my H151F manual transmission. I have read various opinions online, so I'm looking for some wisdom here.

In Australia we use a Castrol VMX-M oil in the HF151, works great and stops those cold graunchy changes

I stumble across this thread every once in a while. Here’s the capacity from the horses mouth.
