Confirmed that the non-US MT OBD2 ECU does get rid of the MIL, but you lose tach because the ECU came from an HZJ80 which never had a tach as they were bare bones models.

$2500 or so for the ECU.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. I've been doing some research on h151 swap and I found this post somewhat confusing.

In an earlier post you said you got the ECU, P/N# 89661-60340 which is the non-US, MT, OBD2, 1FZ ECU.
What does bare bones HZJ80 have to do with it? Why does it matter if HZJ80 came without a tach, if the ECU used is from FZJ80 (which had a tach)?

The signal that drives the tach comes from the ECU. So with no tach signal the tach doesn't function.

Also, I know beno said "OBD2" in his post but I'm not sure that was ever confirmed. I don't dispute that the ECU supports OBD, but OBD comes in several flavors, especially for vehicles produced for non-USA markets. In particular, Toyota had a version called multiplex OBD, or M-OBD, that was prevalent in Japan and I always thought there was a good chance that the 89661-60340 was an M-OBD ECU. Lastly, even if the 89661-60340 has OBD-II it's not clear what standard it conforms to. The Mode 1 PID 1C parameter returns the particular standard the ECU adheres to and in the USA this must be "CARB" to pass emissions test in those states that require OBD-II. (No idea what Canada requires where you're located.)

Thanks for your post - there is some good information there, but that doesnt really answer my question.I understand that ECU drives the tach, but why is the tach not working with this particular ECU, considering that its a 1FZ ecu (which always had a tach)? Why did Beno say that it came from HZJ80 (which supposedly had no tach), when the ECU they used (89661-60340) actually came from 1FZ?!

You're mixing engine models and vehicle models. The 1FZ motor came in many variants and was used in several different vehicles that were sold in many different markets. In North America the 1FZ was only available in the FZJ80, but if you consider Toyota's world-wide market that was definitely not the case. The ECU being discussed here came from a HZJ80 vehicle that was not sold in NA but still used a 1FZ engine.

Im pretty sure that you're wrong on this. The vehicle model is "J80". Whatever letters come before that stand for the engine series in that model (FZJ80 = J80 with the FZ-series engine, HZJ80 = J80 with HZ-series engine, HDJ80 = HD-series). 1FZ engine was available in other LC models in other markets (70, 100, 105 series), but there is no HZJ80 that came with 1FZ engine (regardless of market). The ECU discussed here is for 1FZ engine (it says so on the ECU itself), so it could not have come from an HZJxx truck

You need to take this up with @beno, but if he says the ECU came out of a HZJ80 vehicle then it did.

I have the opportunity to do this swap. I am under the impression that I shouldn't have any CEL issue because mine is a '93. I haven't done more than a cursory search, but I think the 93-94 uses a transmission computer that is not integrated with the engine computer.
