GX460 Tow/Haul mode? (1 Viewer)

If you do go the valve body route, you'll need to call Cruiser Brothers direcltly. They don't actually list it on their website. After calling they sent me a invoice via email, which I paid via CC over the phone, and the valve body and switch arrived a few days later. I do suggest ordering the version without the 1st gear lockup enabled, as it results in harsh engagement into R when the trans is cold. I have yet to use the TCC lockup in 1st on my rig and would have skipped that option if I had known about the reverse engagement.

With the valve body and Hayden 678, the trans temp on mine doesn't get that hot when unlocked, but having it locked does make a huge difference (30+ degrees). I really do like the lockup switch though and hope someone comes up with a solution for the 460.

One other.....but expensive option....is a regear. If you just did a regear to 4.56 it and skipped lockers it would be around $2K or so for assembled 3rd members from ECGS. I'm also likely going this route on my GX so I can tow with cruise control on in 5th gear. The 2UZ-FE just doesn't have enough torque to pull my camper at 60-65 mph in 5th without downshifting to 4th on the slightest grade, and 4th is just a bit too deep. Above 2,200 rpm or so the 2UZ-FE really wakes up and has plenty of cruising torque. I think the 1UR has a bit less low-end torque than the 2UZ-FE so this problem is probably exacerbated in a 460.

A GX with the Nomad valve body and a 4.56 regear would be a towing beast of a midsize SUV.

My "guess" is that tow/haul mode is basically the same as shifting to S and then 4-5-6? You want to stay out of overdrive when towing, which is what the S selector does I think. Lexus does NOT do a good job of explaining this in the owners manual.

In the trucks I've had with tow/haul, it delays shifts to a higher rpm and shifts are quicker. Even if the shifter is in D.

Toyota may make the shifts delayed or firmer in S mode but if they do I can't feel it either in the 460 or Tundra. It seems like its just letting you select the highest gear the trans can shift to.

Toyota tow haul mode is horrendous. Always has been. Only time I’ve ever overheated a transmission was on flat ground towing 7k in a 11 tundra. After that, I only manually shifted and (95%) stayed in 5th. Every tundra owner I know personally has the same complaint. We’ll treat the GX the same.

What I have notices is that S mode shifts sooner when needed, whereas D mode holds onto a gear longer before upshifting or downshifting. That is, unless cruise control is engaged, in which case it downshifts at the drop of a hat.

Beware when modifying / adding the transmission cooler, which requires removal of the battery. I would seem so far that removing the battery for too long can make the in-dash screen grenade and stop working.

Sorry to hear that you are having issues, but I'm guessing hundreds of GX's have their battery disconnected on a yearly basis, and having only a handful of documented complaints (some you linked aren't even from a GX) isn't cause for alarm. What about a transmission cooler install requires removing the battery?

It greatly helps with the room needed to route and connect the hoses. The bottom return line from the radiator is nearly impossible to get access to without removing the battery.

Not trying to discredit your experience, but I have had my battery unplugged for great lengths of time, some for days, probably half a dozen times now maybe more and I’ve never had an issue.
After having the battery unplugged the infotainment does have to cycle through some things. I generally push the start button once to get into acc mode, then let it cycle through, then start the vehicle.
The first time I had the battery out it did give me a moment of concern, because the GX will start but then stop as the infotainment cycles, just as some report in those links above. But it’s always come back to working after loading whatever it needs to for me.
Hope you get it figured out @o8ko8k

Take it for what it's worth, it happened.

Thanks for sharing, that should help myself and the community ascertain the probability of this event occuring.

Also I'm not trying to discredit your non-discredidation but... Lexus uses that computer in more than one vehicle, it would be very wasteful to custom design an in dash computer like that for every car they make.

As I know more and get it resolved I'll post it up.

Ya thought about the regear option, it's a nasty trade space. Better towing mpg but my non towing mpg would suffer. I don't tow enough so I guess I'm best to just getused to it 🤔

Speaking of towing, does anyone else have the factory tow package with a 6,000 lbs rated ball? I have the 6500 lbs factory receiver.

The ball came on the truck brand new and is a factory Toyota part number.

I asked Wholesale Automatics ---> "Do any of your valve body or torque converter lockup products support the Lexus GX 460 (1UR-FE) with A760F transmission?"

Response: "We unfortunately don’t have any lock up kits available for your transmission, however we would be able to rebuild your valve body. Please note there is roughly a 5 week lead time on the valve body rebuild from the time that we receive it.
Please note our dealer that we work with in USA is Cruiser brothers, so all work would be done through them."

Lockup switch is nice, but the valve body is where it's at. You only really need the lockup switch when pulling a long grade in non-lockup gears (3rd and below in the A750F, probably the same in the A760F). Valve body will cool trans temps too and will result in firm shifts. For towing out West it might be a "need" factor.

I did my A750F valve body on an exchange basis with Cruiser Brothers, with a $300 core exchange.
