Another fun day hunting for fossils in the Cuyama Badlands.

I still have no idea what I'm looking for, but spent a great couple of hours walking around smashing rocks open with my kid. I'll call it a success, even if we didn't unearth any dinosaurs.

On the way out, I snapped a cool shot of the narrow entrance to the canyon. It's all super easy wheeling in these river beds, but don't get caught here in the rain or it might get really difficult, really fast.

So that post has me thinking. I know I've posted that area before, even that specific canyon, but I've been going up there for about twenty years. It never gets old for me. Almost every car I've owned has made it back there. Here are just a few examples from a 10mi radius of the pics above.

So what's your favorite spot? I wanna see another angle of Hiluxforever's B-Road, or JDAM's East Sierra shakedown street. Where do you go if you only have a half day and you wanna get dirty?

ETA:
I can't ask y'all to reveal your secret hiding spots if I'm being obscure myself. These pics are all in the vicinity of Quatal Canyon. The narrow side canyon we visited yesterday was Blue Rock Spring, while the 80 series was just across the ridge in Ballenger Canyon, and the Subarus were in Lockwood Valley.

Honestly, I don't know yet. I love the Sierras, but I'm still very new to off-roading and learning what to do. It's why I have minimal mods and still figuring out what I want/need. Just trying to use the truck as it sits and go places instead.

That being said, I think the Mammoth area? Plenty of trails and destinations and 3 hours from home for me.

A reasonable response, for sure.

Part of the reason I keep going back to the same spot is that I know the obstacles and have a baseline to compare to when testing out a new rig. This was my spot back when I had low clearance cars and really pushed my limits, but now I just bump across those same ruts at speed. It was the first place I brought my GX, one week after purchasing, and the last place my old Legacy ever ran thanks to a large rock finding my radiator and subsequent overheating. I did't even air down yesterday, because my confidence is high that I know what I'm getting into and won't get myself into trouble. Not every trip has to push the envelope.

I know the real fun is in exploring new areas and getting farther off the beaten path, but I'd encourage you to find an easy/moderate spot an hour from your house where you can check back on your progress periodically as you learn the sport.

Last detail, for the upcoming holiday: this is where film composer James Horner crashed his small private plane back in 2015 and if you listen close you can hear the haunting tones of an oboe drifting on the wind.

Stopped to comb the sand for treasure a few weekends ago on Assateague National Seashore.
A couple more from the same trip. There was a big fishing tournament near the OSV trail entrance. We journeyed a couple miles south and had everything in sight to ourselves.

Our site for the weekend. Not pictured but the Bay side of the island was just to the left.

A few photos from a recent 3 week trip from Perth to Melbourne/Philip Island for the MotoGP race. The 150 performed flawlessly.

Great pictures and assume good times!! Wonder how much drag racing goes on in that stretch highway?? Or do you have to worry about wildlife (e.g. kangaroos) jumping out?
The few times my family have been to Australia, we never ventured into the outback. It's always been surf trips up and down the east coast (between Sydney and Agnes Water).
I'd love someday to do a little trolling around your back country!
We miss Australia and the people! Always had a great time (and surf and food)!

Beautiful! See any penguins? ;)
Unfortunately, no. Did see wallabies, koalas, dingoes, emu, wombat, and of course roos. Also a s***ton of birds that I have no clue what they all were.

Can't swing a wombat by the tail without hitting a roo. They're all over.

The B roads in Iowa are a relatively recent phenomena and are highly weather dependent. They stay the same when it's dry, but when they get wet, they can be quite exciting just expect to spend 40-50$ at a carwash spraying all the mud off then cleaning the stall up.

My preference is to hit them when they are dry and rutted enough that you have to pick a line.

I am working on collecting a list of B roads, unfortunately I need to transfer the data over from my personal Google account so I can share it.

Here is a screenshot of what I have so far.

Is your license plate short for ROCINANTE? From Don Quixote or The Expanse Series, either way, that would be awesome!

Yes and both

I still have an MCRN grille flag from my jeep. The version corrected by Amos/Timmy of course.

Isn’t it illegal to post a picture of just a heep in a GX picture post?? :flipoff2:
Sorry... guess we'll have to ban Hiluxforever for ever!
Hey Woody! We have someone posting Jeeps on the GX forum!!!! 😝
