Awesome.

I spent a few years and six figures earning a photography degree back at the turn of the century. One of my favorite techniques was shooting star trails because it meant driving to the mountains and spending all night playing with my camera toys. I've even used an intervalometer and telescope tripod head to shoot panning timelapse footage on film.

I still have all of my old gear, on display in my home museum of obsolete technology. My most recent camera purchase was a Sony mirrorless that could accept my ancient Nikon glass with an adapter (about a decade ago). It's been consigned to the same shelf as my old Nikon and my Grandpa's Fujica range finder. I still really enjoy the technical aspects of photography, but my snapshots are turning out better than some of my best planned and meticulously exposed photos.

Sometimes I'll shop the new a7 and consider my options, humoring the thought of getting back into the game. But life goes on and I have other priorities and hobbies to attend to. My work is tangentially related to my degree, so I haven't fully abandoned the craft.

With all that said, I really don't understand how my phone is able to capture some of these images. Not because they're perfect, but because they don't show the expected imperfections. Not only was my top shot handheld, but so was the telephoto shot from the next morning. That should have motion blur from my shaky hands! It's about equivalent to a 200mm lens and 1/125 exposure. I could take a better photo with my old 210mm Nikon glass on my Sony (with a tripod), but setup would've been a pain and the outcome only marginally better.

Enough shop talk. Here's one of the last photos I've ever taken on my Sony/Nikon 50mm f1.4. It's a repost, but it's also from my first trip in the GX after I bought it in 2020. It captures the paint color better than a phone snapshot can, but again those margins are much closer than they used to be.

And here's one of my favorite shots with the same camera/lens set (the adapter pushes the focal length out to around 70mm and the chromatic aberration just adds to the charm).

I feel you on the mortgage like spending on an art degree, I got two lol. But hey you can make a nice image!!

And here I am taking photos with my entry level Canon M50 Mark ii 🤣. These are at Bowman Lake, CA.

A camera does not make the photographer! I spent years learning on a 50mm and a Canon Rebel XS. Small cameras are great places to start because you end up taking them more places and actually doing the photography, so you learn faster. Sometimes I don't bring out a camera because of size or weight or whatever. and I usually regret it. Just gotta keep at it.

We also did Bowman Lake! Drove in from the north, from Gold Lake through Jackson Meadows Reservoir. Such a lovely drive. It was raining on the way in so we didn't see anything, but weather was perfect out.

I did my first dry wash with the ceramic spray before going out for the night. This stuff is awesome. Wiped down the dust, but also hit a couple spots of tree sap as well. No water, just spray, wait, wipe.

It looks like the Guinean flag.
Okay, now you're just getting artsy with all that reflection off your hood...
Nice pic!

Wife and I walked down to the beach and sat for a while enjoying a day off.
Since we've been talking photos, thought I'd post this from yesterday.

My first car was a '73 Scout II. This one, at a park in Santa Barbara on Sunday, was a much later diesel model. I don't know them well enough to tell which variant, but some are apparently quite rare and desirable, so this was a cool survivor to see in stock form. It looked tiny though, which was hard to reconcile with my memories of mine being a massive untamed beast.

Growing up, although that term may not apply to me, one of my friends had an IH Scout. I too recall it being a huge massive beast and thought it was larger. 3 of us would ride around the back roads of the Twin Tiers of NY\Pa. in it on the weekend evenings. Cool picture for comparison!

No expert on them either but I do remember there were a number of variants and one was a foot and half - 2 feet(?) longer or so than others. Some older ones were wider as well. Not many old vehicles left across the North, body and frame cancer took most of them despite many still being mechanically sound.

Father had a ‘74 Scout II.. IIRC.. it was a Nissan diesel used in those rare equipped ones in the latter ‘70s.

That wheel base looks about a foot shorter than your GX.

I should've guessed there'd be some IH fans on this forum. Here's a better pic of the truck in question.

Look at those rust free fenders. It's probably been living the good life in coastal California for the past 50 years or so. And here's a shot of my old beast. It didn't look as good as the one above, even a quarter century ago.

That's from my Highschool photography class, so the paint doesn't come through in black and white. You'll just have to imagine the primer gray with rattle-can black accents. Okay, it looks pretty much exactly like the photo but the sky was blue that day.

And here's another pic with my GX to keep this thread on track.

Welcome to the forum! Some great photos.
I know that road well from climbing Mt. Whitney. Did you camp at Whitney Portal?
I rolled my first overlander vehicle, an F350 crewcab fully built for overlanding on that road coming through the Alabama hills.
Funny thing it was an on pavement accident, I wasn't even off roading when it happened!
BTW, I'm in San Clemente, what part of O.C. are you? North, south, east? Or west if you live on a boat... 😝
If you want to replay without giving up your town, you can also PM me.
Always looking for some local GX's to wheel with.

Howdy! Thanks for the warm welcome r2m. I’m in Tustin. That must have been a sad day but there’s maybe a good story about rolling the F350? And yes quite funny it was on the tiny bit of pavement in the park. We camped in Alabama Hills. It’s all primitive with no facilities but we found a great spot that was nestled amongst the boulders and at the end of a short stretch that probably requires a high clearance 4x4 to get to. It was quite secluded. There are some gems of campsites in the park! Looking forward to the opportunity to go wheel some time!

Your rig looks pretty stock, any plans for it?

Go slow and figure out what I need before I empty out the bank account. 😂

It’s pretty stock. Mild lift and tires. More about exploring in comfort than serious crawling. At least for the time being.

But near term plans would be to shore up some suspension things like flattening out the panhard bar or improving some minor things like interior and exterior lighting. Making things more comfortable and useable for camping. And just getting out there beyond the mall.
