As an engineer there is zero chance this would work for any length of time. Just the difference in thermal expansion between the compound and the surrounding material would probably be enough, let alone being under pressure.

Yes to all. I had the local Land Cruiser specialist in Austin pass on the purchase at a really cheap price. If Edwin doesn’t trust that he can fix it at a reasonable price. There is zero reasons why I think I should. This might be controversial, but currently I have an undrivable hunk of very pretty metal in my driveway. What’s the consensus and downside of trying one of those gaskets ceiling kits?? it doesn’t work and I’m stuck with the exact same situation. I have now.

I could do the heads on my Subaru EJ25 in around ~16 hours of work total, including yanking the motor out and getting it on a stand. Getting the motor out and disassembled is maybe 5-6 hours of work as they are so easy to wrench on. That was before I had things like impact wrenches and cordless ratchets too - today, I could probably do it in ~12 hours.

Over 20 years ago, I did the heads on a 350 Chevy under a gravel carport. That rig had a ton of room to work under the hood and I didn't have an engine hoist so I left the motor in the rig. Also....a small block Chevy is an exceptionally primitive engine with very few accessories hanging off of it.

I'd consider a engine removal on a GX would would need access to an engine crane (which I have) and a 2-post lift (which I don't have but of course want). The motor is packed into a GX to start with. It would be a heck of a job and I'd probably want to take off 2-3 days of work, plus a weekend, to have any chance of getting it done.

I know this is going down the rabbit hole a wee bit, but I remember there used to be contests at VW shows on how fast a Bug engine could be removed, and I think it's less than 10 minutes.

@r2m... I think the straight 200 inline six in my father's '64 Ford Falcon station wagon when I was a kid could be removed in about that time. That three speed on the tree transmission one could easily hold in their hands too.

I'm *very* loftily floating the idea of selling my 460. Partially to free up some funds, partially due to automotive ADHD. Values for used GXs are all over the place and I have no clue what a reasonable asking price would be. The 200 guys have a whole thread for this but we don't so figured it could go in here.

The GX is a 2018. Black over Sepia, 39k miles, clean title, I'm the 2nd owner. No accidents, all maintenance records available, never been smoked in. Tons of upgrades... not that they add to the value. Some trail rash and surface frame/undercarriage rust but nothing consequential.

Curious to hear the hive's thoughts on where I should price this if I were to list it, which will inevitably impact whether I actually do so or not.

39k is really low miles for a 2018 so I would say you list on the high side or slightly over Bluebook and make sure the listing includes the phrase "never offroaded, never abused, I know what I've got" along with several pictures of the GX off roading.

Whether your mods impact sale price or potential buyers really depends on what the suburban dads are up to in your area. The greater-Richmond upper middle class dads are going wild for GXs right now so if nothing else you can drive down to VA and park it at a Wegmans with a FS sale. You'll sell it in a weekend.

Can't attest much to what suburban dads are into or up to here but there's Jeeps and the likes aplenty. Pricing on KBB is in the $32.5k range which admittedly seems low, but looking on CarGurus it seems that similar age/mileage vehicles are listed closer to $40k.

All the tariffs and other shenanigans are making weird stuff happen with the car market. New car prices are going to go up because of tariffs, but there may also be significant supply delays/reduction which would make used car demand higher. Between that and the general idea that people figured out that GXs exist might explain why you are seeing things way over KBB.

The way things are right now, it seems like even extensive off road mods are not really impacting value negatively which is nice. Back in January, my local Lexus dealer said they would give me $25,000 on trade in for my 2017 with 90,000 miles and very obvious off road mods and abuse so the demand must be there.

Wouldn't that require removal of the front timing cover and exhaust manifolds? I've obviously never done head gaskets on a UR but I can say it's not a job I'd want to do with the motor in the vehicle. I can't imagine it being any less than 40 hours of advanced DIY work. Also if the heads were coming off they should really be sent to a machine shop to get checked out and cleaned up.

Yes yes and yes. Luckily the gx is a vehicle you can still get a service manual for. Headgaskets aren't fun, but they aren't impossible either.

I'm finding that KBB is a good representative of what most would ask in the event of a traditional sale, but places like Cars & Bids and Bring A Trailer are more in line with what sellers actually list modified vehicles at within the enthusiast community.

On the aforementioned sites, similar age/mileage vehicles went for:

• Modified 2016 w/90k miles - $32,750
• Lightly modified 2017 w/99k miles - no sale
• Lightly modified 2019 w/90k miles - $32,750
• Stock 2018 w/38k miles - $38,250
• Highly modified 2016 w/62k miles - $61,000
• Stock 2017 w/38k miles - bid to $38k, no sale
• Modified 2016 w/56k miles and accident history - $28,759

Like I said, prices are all over the place. Based on the above I think it could go in the $35k range.

A few months ago I was toying with the idea of another GX (unmodified), and found that prices looked to be about $10k higher than they were in 2021 when I bought my current GX (for 3 years old, 40-50k miles). And that was before all this tariff chaos.
