I have been purposely reeling in my soft shackle attached to the end of my winch line, the knot at the fairlead. My winch line terminates to a small loop and the soft shackle just goes through- basically a DIY bleeping jeep freedom line/yankum rope guide. So far, I'm able to just pull it out.

I've only used for reeling in under tension, never in a real recovery event. the weak point I think its the tight radius since it's really only the winch line diameter. My winch line is 3/8", soft shackle is 7/16".

I'm curious in experts' thoughts on this approach.

I have the same setup, but also haven't had the chance to use it. I figured that the hook connects to the same small metal loop, so the soft shackle shouldn't be any different, unless I'm missing something. I like the idea of removing as much metal out of the setup as possible. May get to try it out this weekend at a local club wheeling event.

Why not use the soft shackle in place of the hook?

my sick bronze winch hook matches my sick bronze wheels which is much more important than safety or whatever.

@Roody I believe the algorithm pushed me your Magnaflow Overland exhaust video on Youtube so now that's scheduled to arrive this weekend. I am torn between the options for my next offroad trip in a few weeks:

1. Install the Magnaflow ASAP because V8 noises, it will look much better with the Dissent rear bumper, and I think there is a pinhole leak in the main OEM muffler anyway.
2. Keep the stock exhaust because it will be funny to have to chop the rear resonator off on the trail when I inevitably crush it again and install the Magnaflow when I get back home.
3. Bring the Magnaflow with me and install it mid offroad trip after crushing the OEM exhaust one last time because it will also be funny and how hard could it be?

I have done rear brakes and few times on my truck, for reasons, and I tried to do the 4runner tonight and ended up stripping out the extraction holes like a newb. Will get back at it on Saturday when I can beat the **** out of it.

Normally when I am reminded that every mundane car maintenance task is 1 broken bolt away from being a 4 day ordeal its because I told my wife something like "this will maybe take an hour" and then immediately ruin everything.

We used to get marine grade anti seize in 5 gallon pails in the engine room a couple times a year. But some of it may have been diverted to be mixed with engineering blue and a malcontent painted with it. They would usually fall in line long before the mixture wore off their skin.

My serious recommendation is Option 1, but Option 3 and the visual of breaking out a replacement exhaust while on the trail is pretty hilarious

Best tool for something stripped/rounded is a $300 cheapo flux core welder . Weld on a new nut, and most times it will back right out - often due to the applied heat which really softens things.

Is there a non-OEM bracket for a front license plate or is the OEM bracket the way to go? It would be for a 2011.

So I just lost my 205k 2015 to a blown head gasket. Which I've never heard of anyone else doing at least not common. Am I being too optimistic in immediately purchasing this: '12 222k mile one owner GX?

Looks pretty clean to me. It is a Texas car so that is great, but I see no other regular maintenance done other than oil changes on the carfax.

Do you have a front license plate law in our state? We do in CA, but they only enforce if they're looking for a reason to pull you over.
But to your post, sorry, I can't answer to that as I have MetalTech front bumper.
Doing an Amazon search or Google didn't bring up anything?
