Is there a front engine skid plate with a trap door to change the oil filter without having to remove the entire plate? I was planning on getting an RCI as I've had previously on my 4Runner - but their website indicates you still have to remove the entire plate to access the oil filter and the trap door is not useable for the GX models.

Any other brands that offer a useable trap door? Looking for 1/4" aluminum.
Budbuilt has GX460-specific maintenance doors on their skids.

I have the RCI front skid, and don't have to remove it to change the filter. You can loosen/tighten it from the passenger's side wheel well with a few extensions on your ratchet and filter tool, and remove it from the 4R trap door. Shame on Toyota for designing a horizontal filter housing. Of more annoyance on the RCI's is that the drain plug hole is "slightly" in the wrong place, making removal of the Fumoto safety clip a bit of a pain. Anyway, I still like the RCI skid system. Lots of dangly bits under the GX, and I've scraped them up pretty good.

I encourage finding a good indy with an open workshop. Like to see whats being done.
And hence, someone else does my maintenance... ;)
I look at how long I would spend on such a project and how much my billing time is worth if I were working, and I bill out at a lot higher $$$ than it costs to get it done by a mechanic. Yeah, if I had a lift and was as fast as a mechanic, I could justify doing it myself, but I don't have a lift and I'm not fast.
I only like to fiddle with fun stuff, like adding mods or??

Yeah those were from my porch.

I am going to make a point of finding dirt this weekend. This is the longest I have gone without some level of offloading since I bought a 4wd in 2020.

Go visit Mammoth Basin some time and take a picture for me. It might not be accessible until next spring, but it's my favorite place on earth.

ETA:
Switzerland Trail is probably still doable. There were some fun trails above Boulder back in the day, but I haven't got a clue if they're still open.

I was consulting the good book earlier and that is on my short list along with a few others around Nederland.

I never did finish Switzerland Trail back in 2022.

Lived in So. Cal all my life and never wheeled up in the Mammoth area. Wife and I will have to check that out! Although it'll have to be minimum a overnighter or 3 day weekend.

Did it in early April 2021 partially in the snow and can't wait to run it again
I got stuck about half way down once.
In the rain.
At night.
In a Subaru.

I'm at least 10% smarter now.

Wrong Mammoth. This one's in Colorado. Better make it a 5 day trip and bring extra snacks.

Thanks for the correction. Didn't know there was another Mammoth.

Now that we have acknowledged the 🐘 in the room.

They're everywhere. Not as common as "Mount Baldy" but probably in the top 20 place names. Somebody get all these mother****ing Mastodons off my mother****ing plain.

The one in Colorado is accessible with a low clearance vehicle, if you don't mind beating it up a bit. I've even gotten an old Toyota Tracel EZ hatch up there once. I also used to load up my mom's Subaru Justy with my mountain bike and take it to Kingston Peak for rides. Lots of opportunities up there, but probably all snowed in for the time being.

James Peak is on the right, Kingston on the left. You can drive all the way to that summit and over the ridge to Saint Mary's glacier on the west side.

Mammoth\Mastodons, pfft! I grew up in the town of Chemung. The word Chemung comes from an Algonquin dialect and means "big horn". The name is in reference to many large mammoth tusks in the area discovered by Native Americans in the river and river plain. Not many places named Chemung.

Damn Mastodons get the hell off the yard!

I just searched "Mammoth Basin Colorado" on Google earth and it took me to a spot down by Pueblo/Canon City. So that's two in Colorado.

Mammoth Pool reservoir is on the west side of the California Sierras on the San Joaquin river. Not too far from the eponymous ski resort in a straight line, but a whopping 465mi by car since there are no passes over the range in that area.

I've counted 3 Mammoth Creeks in Alaska, but I sort of doubt that's all you'd find with a better map. They actually had some of those wooly beasts living there in recent times and Mastodon ivory is a thriving market.
