I have a nice ‘06 LX470 with 200k on it. Great color with nothing wrong and well taken care of. A guy wants to trade for his ‘10 Trail Teams with the same mileage. The truck look fine but has some God-awful wheels on it. The trail team is not perfect; he says it’s got a valve cover leak, some cracked lens, ripped seat and some surface rust on the frame. I’m well versed in frame rust so I’ll spare pics as it’s not worth sharing anyhow - you need to see in person. He also said when it’s cold, the gear shift lever feels “sticky” pulling out of P into R or D. I’ve never heard of that. Said it’s fine the rest of the day.

My question is would this be a good trade on my part? I know squat about FJCs but my little research says the Trail Teams are sought after when I do want to sell it. I would use it just on weekends, like my LX, to go camp and hit FSRs.

anything sound like a deal breaker?

The sticky shifter is easy to fix - just pull the center console off and get in there and give it a good cleaning - I'm sure its got a bunch of debris that's made the lube harden up. Add some lube back to the gate shifter detent mechanism and it will be good. Valve cover job is typical at that mileage and isn't terrible to do, probably take half a day if you have all your ducks lined up. Do all the small coolant lines that run in the valley while you are in there.

thanks - what do you think? Worth going for on a trade?

Having owned both (well technically I had a Toyota vs the Lexus), I wouldn't trade the 100 for an FJC. The 100's are a dramatic step above the FJC's in regard to build quality and overall ruggedness. Also, you can't see a thing from inside the FJC. Keep in mind that the 4.7 is known for being dead reliable under regular maintenance (with many examples of rigs attaining over a million miles on the original engine) and the same cannot be said for the 1GR-FE.
This is of course only one opinion, but I'll also state the the 100 series we owned we had kept for seven years without a single problem. I sold the FJC within a year due to multiple issues coming up within that time (low mileage, and a solid maintenance history).

I'm at about 318K now. I've got a timing chain in my future, but only because I found a couple small bits of black plastic in the oil pan - plastic chain guide is breaking down.

Do you go about the service on these the same you would on a 22RE? I've always replaced the guides when I've had to dig into the front of the engine (water pumps, head gasket, etc.).

IMHO The FJC are just plain ugly keep the 100 🤷‍♂️

If the roles were reversed, would you have offered to trade the 100 for his FJC? Doesn't sound like you were ever really looking to get into one. Probably sparked some curiosity more than anything else. If you were actually and actively pursuing an FJC then maybe not much to lose. If you don't like it it's an easy sell and you can get back into a 100 or move up into a 200.
