i gotcha. My mom is actually waiting on her permit. once she gets the gun, we will have my dad go get it so she can give it to him. It is actually really funny, because my mom is NOT one to be at the sheriffs office getting a gun permit. i love it.

told me what? i knew about the permitting, she just thought it would take 7-10 days like the website said, but apparently it will be the 22nd before she gets it. I was just laughing at my mom getting the permit. She said it was "scary". A lamb obviously :)

Since you guys are talking about your CCP I thought I would let you know I am a member of Triangle Krav Maga and one of the services they offer is the concealed carry class and just happen to be running a special on the class for 59.00 which is half price of most classes in the triangle. It will only take you one Saturday and then a little paper work and you dont have to worry about buying permits. I am not trying to push the class for any personal gain, I just had to pay full price when I got mine 10 years ago and this is a good deal.

Ontharox then doesn't the permit applicant have to take paper work to local sheriffs dept for finger printing and background check? depending on the county and back log this can take 30 to 90 days....

Correct me if im wrong

and my permit is only good for 5 yrs then I must renew.

You are correct you take the class certificate to your county's sheriffs office and fill out the paper work and get finger printed. The permit has to be renewed every 5 years but its about as hard as getting your DL renewed and the lines are much shorter.

Plus the $$$ in cash only to the sheriff. Be happy you don't live in Mecklenburg county, you might only have a "normal" wait before getting your papers approved. And you have to make an appointment with them here. Took 4 months to get everything approved.

Don't let the carry permit expire for even a day or you have to start all over again.

John said expiring... hmmm so i looked at mine doh guess they dont send a letter! Im going to the sheriff today.

That's why I'm glad that I am still a FL resident and CCW holder. Their CCW is super easy as it is run by the Agriculture and Licensing Dept.

I was told it was a zero tolerance on expired CCP, also make sure you keep an accurate record of who your instructor was for your class, along with the location, and date. You will need this if you ever move to a different county and have to renew.

My notes from the class say:
--It can take 4 - 6 weeks for the new registration card to arrive so renew at least that long before expiration. You cannot carry concealed if you're waiting on the renewal after the old one's expiration date.
--Submitting for renewal after the expiration date will require a retaking of the course, even if by one day.

That's from my handwritten notes so there's always the chance that I'm wrong. I failed to write down the renewal process (maybe we weren't told).

Actually, you can continue to carry. Check out section C below.

§ 14‑415.16. Renewal of permit.
(a) At least 45 days prior to the expiration date of a permit, the sheriff of the county where the permit was issued shall send a written notice to the permittee explaining that the permit is about to expire and including information about the requirements for renewal of the permit. The notice shall be sent by first class mail to the last known address of the permittee. Failure to receive a renewal notice shall not relieve a permittee of requirements imposed in this section for renewal of the permit.
(b) The holder of a permit shall apply to renew the permit within the 90‑day period prior to its expiration date by filing with the sheriff of the county in which the person resides a renewal form provided by the sheriff's office, an affidavit stating that the permittee remains qualified under the criteria provided in this Article, a newly administered full set of the permittee's fingerprints, and a renewal fee.
(c) Upon receipt of the completed renewal application and the appropriate payment of fees, the sheriff shall determine if the permittee remains qualified to hold a permit in accordance with the provisions of G.S. 14‑415.12. The permittee's criminal history shall be updated, including with another inquiry of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), and the sheriff may waive the requirement of taking another firearms safety and training course. If the permittee applies for a renewal of the permit within the 90‑day period prior to its expiration date and if the permittee remains qualified to have a permit under G.S. 14‑415.12, the sheriff shall renew the permit. The permit of a permittee who complies with this section shall remain valid beyond the expiration date of the permit until the permittee either receives a renewal permit or is denied a renewal permit by the sheriff.
(d) No fingerprints shall be required for a renewal permit if the applicant's fingerprints were submitted to the State Bureau of Investigation after June 30, 2001, on the Automated Fingerprint Information System (AFIS) as prescribed by the State Bureau of Investigation.
(e) If the permittee does not apply to renew the permit prior to its expiration date, but does apply to renew the permit within 60 days after the permit expires, the sheriff may waive the requirement of taking another firearms safety and training course. This subsection does not extend the expiration date of the permit. (1995, c. 398, s. 1; c. 507, s. 22.2(b); 2000‑140, s. 103; 2000‑191, s. 1; 2009‑307, s. 1; 2011‑268, s. 18.)
