Hey all,

I am looking to buy my dad a Glock 22 in Raleigh this weekend. Do any of you have a shop that is knowledgeable with fair prices? Also, i have never purchased a gun for someone else. What are the laws around getting the weapon registered when bought as a gift.

Thanks,

Parker

also, for the glock guys here. Would you say the Gen 4 is worth the extra money over a gen 3?

Ive got a longtime friend opening a tactical shop in Jville - he suggests PDHC in Raleigh.

He says a gen 4 should only be about $25 more than a gen 3 and the grips will feel better. . he's usually on point too.

and just for my personal 2 cents - my huz has 2 glocks, I have a walther 40 and my daughter has a walther 22. Either of the Walthers feels more 'intuitive' - that could just be a girls opinion..Every guy we've shot with has picked up my walther and said "wow - that DOES feel good in your hands" To me - glocks are stiff and clumsy, I guess one outta two aint bad:grinpimp:

Thanks Sarca. I appreciate it. How does the huz feel about the glock v walther?

Ill have him get on here in when he gets home and give u specifics..I try not to encourage him with questions on guns ..he ll get excited thinking I want another one.

I've got a gen 3 G23 which is just slightly smaller than the 22 but same caliber. The gen 4 has the interchangeable backstraps as well as 3 mags versus the 2 mags with a gen 3. I went with the gen 3 because it fit me perfectly and was $75 cheaper then the Gen 4 at the time. Extra mags can be had for $20-25 so it was not worth the extra coin for the backstraps. With that said, since it is a gift and you can't confirm fit and feel you might want to go ahead with the Gen 4. Jerry is the Glock guru of the bunch so he will probably chime in soon. Personally I love Glocks. Very simple, few mechanical moving pieces and don't require a ton of cleaning. HTH

If you don't have a Concealed Carry Permit, you'll need to get a pistol permit from the Wake County Sheriff. If you haven't started the process, you won't be able to do it this weekend.

http://www.wakegov.com/sheriff/divisions/Pages/pistolpermits.aspx

If you purchase from an individual, no need for a permit unless that person requires it.

I'd also recommend PDHC, I've shot with the owner and his son and they are good people.

Not what you wanted to read but its the facts as I know them...

Regarding Glocks over "X" manufacturer, its all about fit and function. I find Glocks a very well made, easy to maintain and viable handgun. I like Walther's also and many other firearms. Yet, I can completely breakdown a Glock, be my own "armorer" and have it function without a hiccup.

But, if it doesn't fit your hand, it doesn't matter who makes it. Its a mistake I hate seeing people make, buying a firearm without ever shooting it.

Just my 2 cents...

my mom is actually the one picking it up. (having a DC ID makes this next to impossible anywhere in the US without your full DNA sequencing first) I believe she has started the process. I told her to at least. I am going with PDHC. He as 22 in stock in the OD green that i think my old man will like. I am sticking with the gen 4 for the reasons Eric said. Mainly, he will not have held it before, so adjustable grips are key. According to the interweb, it has slightly less recoil as well. I am not sure if this is true or not though.

very cool. thanks for the info. Its always good to know you are working with good people, and good facilities. This is his 60th b-day present by the way.

Lawmens in Raleigh is another good place. I like Springfield Armory XDs over the glock but they are basically the same gun. Just a personal preference. I carry a S&W and much prefer the SA over it, but I'm getting more used to it now. Just my .02$. If the person you are buying the guy for can legally own the gun then there is no law that I'm aware of that wont allow you to buy it for them. But check with a cop/lawyer/gunstore to confirm that.

Let us know what you get.

Huz says the ergonomics of the walther are far better. He doesn't like the magazine release on the walther - its much like an AR15 and takes getting used to.

He has a Glock 22 (gen 4) and a 27. He says gen 4 has less recoil due to spring design, easy to modify due to aftermarket part availability.

Final word from my house expert walther is great and even preferable, if you don't want to do a lot of accessorizing or mods.

Sig sauer is for real shooters! :) smith and wesson mp are nice too. Glock stinks! My .02

Explain why Glock stinks. Go ahead and say something brilliant like "tupperware" or its plastic while all the other manufactuers mentioned are all about copying the features, performance and reliability of the Glock.

Ask an armorer what they work on more...

The reason i dont like them is that they dont fit in my meatball hands and everyone has one. Thats it.

So personnel reasons

Because you cannot adequately pistol whip somebody with a polymer frame:flipoff2:

Seriously, the newer Glocks are as reliable as the rest. All the ND problems that had bern seen in the high use PD guns have been addressed and fixed.

Personally what I do not like about the Glock is the point and shoot ergonomics of their grips. If I hold the Glock with a straight wrist, the pistol points up. I have to cant my wrist down to have the pistol "point" straight. None of the rest of my pistols (Colt, Sig, Browning, HK, S&W, Beretta) have similar angles. I can pick up and point with the same grip and the sights are lined up.

But I cut my teeth in direct action shooting packages shooting the pistol as John Moses Browning indented it.
MEUSOC 1911, man's gun:grinpimp:

x2, they seem like good people. I'm picking up an AWC Amphibian from them as soon as my Firearms Trust is complete and notarized.

So the gun laws in North Carolina have changed recently, you are now required to have a buying permit or a CCP to purchase a hand gun. You also have to provide one of the two when you buy from an individual and is not a per request situation. It even extends to gifts, as the person receiving the gift has to have a permit or CCP, in the event you are willed a gun from an estate the weapon will be held in probate buy the law firm in charge of the will until you can provide one of the two permits.
