header install

Hi all,

I have the tick, tick noise which prompted me to get a pair now I just have to find someone local to install. The local Toyota dealer quoted $1800 labor  and said they would not install unless I could provide docs saying they were legal for emissions purposes WTF. Anyhow does anyone know of someone in the Wyoming area that would install these without raping me for cost? Location is Sheridan Wyoming. Thanks.

That makes sense. They can not legally alter anything to do with the emissions side of the motor. So yes, they are covering themselves, but understandably so.

According to Thorley, the EO number is welded on each header. So, that should take care of the emissions question, but there's no way I'd pay that price. There's got to be a shop in Casper or Billings that could do it.

That sounds like one of those 'we really don't want to deal with this but if you really want to do it and are willing to overpay we will' quotes.

I would make the drive to Slee! They know the 100, support the MUD community, have done good work for me in the past and he's posted on this thread so he knows what he is getting into.

6 hours 40 minutes each way plus install
or
$1800 at the dealer

Sounds like DIY is the best option.

Or a "what choice do you have in northern Wyoming" quote.

I'm getting ready to have my headers installed next week. Can everyone please post the prices they paid? What do you think is fair? How many hours should it take for an experienced mechanic with proper tools and no major rust issues?

Doug Thorley headers, gaskets

I'm going to be ordering a set of DT headers soon. Do I use stock Toyota gaskets (header to head) or does DT have their own gaskets?

2000 LC100

Toyota gaskets.

According to Nick at DT, you can re-use the original metal gasket. However, the popular opinion among Mud members is that it's cheap money to replace with new OEM. DT does not supply gaskets.

I ordered some header to exhaust down tube crush seals from c-dan and they seemed to be a little under sized when compared to the header. I do not have any pictures right now. Does anyone know if the header tube is oversized for the stock exhaust tube or is this crush seal just small?

Ceramic coating should cut underhood temps.

Does that mean the BBQ Ribs will not be cooked properly after being on the top of the engine for 4 to 6 hours?

At Rubicon trail, once we hit the camp totally exhausted and starving, we just took out very juicy BBQ ribs out of 4 layers of Alum foils and seared it with high temp grill, a very excellent outcome in short time.

Time will tell.

Cheers,

Okay..headers are installed. Had it done at Lipton Toyota in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Very good service.

They looked up the warranty hours for two manifolds (11 hours) at $96 per hour labor (almost $1100 in labor) but offered to do it for $750. Then I asked them if they would do it for $700 and they agreed (I have been a customer a several years). They had to replace 4 studs but did not charge extra. It actually took the tech from about 8:30 AM to 4PM for the headers and oil change. I feel I got a decent deal considering it was done at a dealership in South Florida. Apparently the drivers side was a pain in the a$$.

Now to performance: I feel a slight increase in power at low RPM. Shift points are different. Squeezing the pedal, I noticed the tranny did not downshift right away - it just started accelerating smoothly in the same gear - kind of cool. Have not tried highway yet.

I will try to get an idea of the mileage after my next fill-up.

What are everyone elses thoughts?

I paid 480 at 4wheel parts though they wanted to charge 640 plus shop fees and tax. Plenty of rust on DS. I paid the quote they gave me originally, but I am bettign they will quote this job at 600-640 in the future.

As to performance I feel that the overall smoothness of the power band is much improved. Mid range power is up significantly and low end power is up but not nearly as much. No word on mileage yet, but I was only getting 11 mpg before the headers and new upstream o2 sensors.

It occurs to me that 500-600 is a good price to pay.

@FOPLawyer: $480 would have been nice but I guess it is unrealistic unless the mechanic underestimates the job in the first place

What did everyone else pay (at Toyota or independent mechanic)? So far only about 5 people posted their installation stories - I thought about 30 members bought the headers.

A write up with pics would be great :D I plan to have mechanic I know do it- hopefully after hours and for a few hundered bucks.
