... searching on here reveals that a group 31 battery fits without modification. So, I went ahead and tried it after Ryan's group 31 kit had been discontinued. And as it turns out, the only modifications that needs to be done is 1) to extend the positive side by the use of a copper extension. Luckily for me, Ryan still sells those and that made my installation that much easier. 2) a longer bolt for the clamp. I don't know the exact size I used... I just looked through my toolbox and found one that worked perfectly.

The original J-hook works but ideally, a longer one would be great. I don't have the battery tray and didn't try to cut the OEM tray to see if the battery will sit on top of that. I will have to see what I can come up with for that issue.

Also, I would have to add a spacer for the clamp bolt as the clamp just "floats" as it is right now.

here are the pics:

I put the group 31 battery in. I ended up trimming the angle clamp off of the front side of the clamp and slightly a bit of the arm, when you snug it down it fits fine Then repainted and it worked great. You do need the extension for the positive terminal, I used a piece of cooper I had in the garage.

It might be better to just bend the hold down clamp a little so it bolts down tight to the apron as the OEM fitment does instead of using a spacer then you will maintain original hood clearance.

Will size 31 fit in the plastic tray or would you have to remove anyway?

That is my next step. I believe the Tacoma guys do that with their clamps...

Didn't even try the tray.... i'm sure it's too small but maybe trimming off the sides and having it sit on a small space is better than nothing???

That is a simple solution thanks for the tip.

31 will fit in the tray if you cut one of the short edges off with the dremel. I posted some pics on my built as I started installing my new battery tonight.

Oh hell this is a stupid question but I have always wondered since seeing that clamp retro by shaggy101...

why go with a group 31 battery? Is there an added advantage?

It helps you go to Hollister with other Land Cruiser enthusiasts.

More reserve capacity. It's helpful if you are running lots of electrical accessories or starting in difficult climate conditions. The Platnium DH battery is AGM so it has beneficial properties for 4 x 4 in terms of vibration.

What parts did everyone use to connect the positive terminal? I've been to Autozone twice now and can't find something to extend the positive cable far enough to reach the post.
