I’ve had a grinding noise from the front right to middle right side of my cruiser for a few hundred miles. Sounds like a whaw whaw whaw only between 13-20MPH. Not a consistent sound, about 1 second between the whaws.

Cold/hot same. Left turn right turn same.

I took a rubber mallet to the body and exhaust to rule that out.

About 4k miles ago I did a front axle overhaul.

Is the below movement normal, if not, what is wrong? Anything else to check?

FR wheel

I’ll add, front DS tire has same movement.

Here’s a pic of the front drive shaft, there’s an indent on the rust spot but no fresh metal to indicate rubbing.

Bump, any ideas? I’ll try to get a video of the noise if that’s helpful.

Sounds come from lot places. You really shouldn’t have play at 12 and 6 o’clock. If you do loose wheel bearings, being you say grinding in the title and whaw whaw sound, how are your drive shaft ujoints? I’d be looking at the wheel bearings and drive shaft
Got a rock stuck in the brake shield?

U Joints are OG to my ownership, 70k miles and on my list to replace.

I did notice a visible gouge in the FR rotor when I had the wheel off, but I would not say it was drastic. It made a 360 on the rotor, maybe a couple mm deep. The rotors were replaced when I did the axle overhaul.

The rotation your video shows is excessive.

Remove the dust cap at the end of the front hubs and watch for movement where the axle splines meet the hub flange.
If the movement is at the hub flange, you need new flanges, new birfs, or both.

IMHO that rotation is normal.

Check your wheel bearings. if you followed the FSM, they may be loose. Needs to be 35 LB-FT / 45 LB-FT. (Not LB-IN)
Grease in the front knuckle. Could be a dry spindle bushing.
Check caliper bolts to make sure they are tight.
Grease U-Joints and Slip Yoke.
